I just finished reading Summer of the monkeys to my 5th grade class and need a suggestion for a really good read aloud to follow it up with. Something challenging, uplifting, and maybe even historical. Also does anyone have an idea for a fun and motivating research project? We have the over testing blues - we give a standardized test EVERY month and are preparing for the writing test in Feb. Thank you.

If you tried Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor you could do the research project based off of the novel. Civil rights/slavery type things. I just finished reading Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt to my class and they loved it. It is a difficult book to read aloud, because there is a lot of dialouge, but I was trying to get my kids to see past series books (and it worked for some).
