In a neighboring district I just noticed two positions open at an elementary school where I know 2 teachers from church. I've known these women for over 20 years. In another life, I could have been one's daughter in law.

I slept in this past Sunday  to ask them about it but I wasn't looking because the application was grating on my nerves. And the positions just opened this past Monday.

How could I mention them tactfully in a cover letter? Or should I even do it?

Should I wait until Sunday to ask them? I even double checked even though I knew but both are current teachers there even on the website under team pictures big as day

I wouldn't. Maybe list them as a reference and send it along with your resume? Cover letter should be more about you and your strengths...not who you know. (But then again what do I know)!

I agree... ask them to be references but don't name drop in your cover letter.

I wouldn't mention them in the cover letter - I agree that that should really be about you - but I would absolutely mention that you're applying to them and see if they might be willing to put a word in for you with the principal. Depending on how the interview process there works it may or may not help, but it definitely wouldn't hurt.

I wouldn't mention them in a cover letter but I've had applications ask if I know anybody who works in the district. Or if they ask how you heard about the district, mention them there.
