I will be retiring from teaching next year. I am taking early retirement to move back home to Orlando. I think 38 years is long enough to teach. But, I don't want to stop working completely because I am too young to get retirement income unless I want to take a big hit in benefits.

Soooo...after lots of consideration, I am going to work at Disney World for a few years. It is really coming full circle for me. When I moved to Florida more than 30 years ago, I had been recruited from the northeast into a management position at Disney. When I got to Florida, Disney had implemented a hiring freeze and couldn't place me right away. So, I got another job teaching and the rest is history.

Soooo...I guess this is another thread about the Circle of Life.

I'm feeling more at ease now that I have made some decisions about the future.

Nice! I have a friend who delayed teaching for 2 years so she could go and work at Disney. She loved it.

    Good luck to you!

I'm looking at positions in hospitality. They have an assortment of positions ranging from greeting people at the airport and getting them to the resort to vacation planners and other positions like that. I'm a people person and I like interacting with people. I'm definitely looking for a position where I do my job and leave it there when I go home!

Sounds like a great opportunity!! I had a friend that worked 6 months there with some college program. She loved working there and wants to go back. She did find her husband there too. ;)

I applied for the position of greeting people at the airport and getting them to the resort, recently actually. I did all their questionnaires and set up a time for an interview but I cancelled it. While I think working at Disney would be awesome…… the 1hr 20min drive without traffic from Daytona Beach to Orlando everyday would make me go insane. Esp. since we only have one car.

    Good luck!

That would be a really long drive for you Christeena. We are looking to buy our retirement home next summer in the general area of Kissimmee so that should cut down on the commute.

Fantastic!! We're at Disney right now, and I would love to work here. We went down to the employee tunnels on a tour and there are signs everywhere about being positive. It just looks like a GREAT place to work.

Bandnerdtx...I'd like to work in hospitality.

I used to have this ongoing dream about working for Disney. (I have had several ongoing dreams that last a year or so each and are used as stress relievers and guided imagery practice). My dream was to work as a visionary that changed the accessibility practice for all companies under Disney and ultimately saved the world (lol...thinking like Pinky and the Brain... oh wait.. that's Warner's Bro.). My job meant I had to travel to all properties, survey them and make policy changes then follow through with helping each property obtain the necessary resources to make the changes.

    I can see it now,
The retirement party :celebrate: is at its peak, balloons, streamers, glasses clinking, people laughing, people singing, a reporter sticks a mike in front of Swansong1.....

Reporter, "Swansong1, You just retired after 38 years of teaching What are you going to do next?"

Swansong1, "I am going to Disney World"

Cue music "When you wish upon a star....."

    Cute IrishDave.

Well, Swan, I can definitely say I am jealous. If one is going to semi-retire, than that is a fun way to do so. :)

I have been thinking a lot about my future. I do love teaching, I really do, but I guess in my short 6 year career, I have just seen too many things that bums me out. My hubby has been telling me that I should get my admin credential. I don't know. I'm still waiting for that sign. :)

Most of my dreams were centered around me surveying Disney cruises... perhaps because I've never been on one. I sooo want to go on one. I've never heard of Disney Hollywood Studios.

The soccer team spent most of the day lined up for rides (2 hours for the Rock 'n' Roll coaster and an hour for Tower of Terror). My husband, son and I caught 3 shows and just wandered around. Great day--the Block Party Bash parade was the highlight!

I think it was a better park when Nickelodeon Studios were open and they filmed there, but it's still nice.

    HAHAHAHA...COOL!

Through my life - for various reasons - I wanted to do a variety of jobs. I always wanted to be a cashier (that was from grocery store trips with my mom when I was young - I loved watching their fingers fly over the keys.) Now I am one - as a side job. I have FOREVER wanted to be a teacher -even before I went to kindergarten. I have been teaching in one way or another since I was in 6th grade (working as an aide in Summer Bible School at first). i wanted to be a waitress, work in a concession stand, and be in charge of bulletin boards and planning theme units and integrated curricuculum. Check, Check, Check, and Check.

What do I want for my retirement or older years? Work at Disney World and finally be a greeter at Wal-mart.

Swansong... you're living my dream! :thumb:

I've always been one that wants to do a lot of different jobs too! Teaching was one that stayed on my list long enough. I know it is for me and I'll go back to it. Another one that remains on my list but one I can never seem to have the staying power for is writing. I suppose I write every day but you know what I mean. I want to write a novel just for the sake of it one day. I once wanted to train blind people how to use computers and do mobility training. I wanted to work in a law office. I've wanted to lobby. I wanted to be an advocate for people with certain types of disabilities. I've wanted to be an architect that builds homes for different disabilities. Actually, most of my dreams also have another common thread... special needs. My disney world dream even had the special needs theme running through it.
