My dad suffering from a head injury

Kinder - I'm so sorry that things are not going well for your dad!
I'm sending prayers for him and your whole family.
God bless.

My dad had a stroke. Thanks for the prayers. I'm home to take care of family things, and then heading back up to be with my mom and dad. Prayers are appreciated! It means so much.

My dad was sent home to recover from the stroke. I got a call and found out he was admitted back into the hospital because he has an infection in his lungs and water around his heart. I'm on my way back home again tomorrow. Hopefully they caught it in time and will have it under control. I am so drained, but I can't even imagine how my dad is feeling! :( Thanks all for your well wishes.

Oh no! Hugs to you. Remember this happened last winter with my Pepere. He kept going in and out of the hospital all winter. I swear they catch the infections at the hospital.

Jaime, how long til he got better? Sounds just like what my dad is going through, and I agree......I bet he picked up the infection IN the hospital! Thanks to you and hes for the kind words. It helps me feel better just to talk about it on here......I hate acting glum and talking about it around my kids. They worry more then I do. So I am glad I can come to the forum and talk about it with all of you..... Great therapy! :)

I don't remember when he had the stroke. I think it was around Feb. break. I remember going to see him at the nursing home (rehab) center, the weekend of Cinco-De-Mayo.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I certainly understand how drained you are feeling--be sure to take care of yourself. Please continue to keep us posted on how your dad is doing.

AWWWWWWWWW, thanks moonbeams!!!! He is making a slow steady recovery. They removed him from a blood thinner he was put on for his heart meds/pacemaker. He was given some numbers they wanted his blood to be at.......had been at a 1.75 (lower the number the thicker your blood).......they were hoping to thin it out to a 2.6...........well, when he went in, his blood was at an 8.7!!!!! he was hemorrhaging to death internally and didn't know it! Thank goodness they caught it when they did......he would have died within a short amount of time! Now he will have some more tests tomorrow to find out if and when he can go back on some sort of blood thinners.....he needs to be on them for his heart. Thanks for the prayers....so far, we've been blessed! Keep em coming!

This test is called a PT/INR and is used to monitor a medication called coumadin. I've read that there is a home test. It's important to keep close tabs on the values in order to be within theraputic range (2.0-3.0). Also, the patient should be monitoring himself for any sign of bleeding such as bruising.

Here's a thread on a nursing forum that discussed these home testing devices.

The forum won't allow me to provide a link yet apparently, but according to the thread on allnurses, there is a home monitoring device, maybe check into it. An INR of 8.7 is indeed a critical lab value.

Jaime, I have no idea what type of infection it is. If I ask my dad, he probably wouldn't know either. He had more bad news today. His internist found a nodule (as of yet unidentified) and a blood clot on his lung and said he has lung disease. He asked my dad how much he smoked, and my dad said he's NEVER smoked a day in his life! :( This poor man.......can NOTHING go right for him?

C-diff is an infection of the gastro-intestinal system. It is usually treated with a medication callled flagyl. It is a nosocomial infection that strikes vulnerable populations. Their suseptability to this infection is often precepitated by prior exposure to antibiotic therapy, advanced aged or other risk factors...

Oh, I feel so bad for your dad! He has been through so much already. I'm sorry to hear the latest news!
Continued prayers for him and your mother - and the rest of your family!

Oh, kinderkids, what difficult news. Your poor dad - and mom and you, too. It is so hard to see parents aging. Several of us at work are in that same position. I will pray for you all.

Oh Nancy. I'm so sorry to hear more upsetting news. If it does make you feel better, my dad has moderate lung disease and has lived with it for many years already. Not that it's a good thing, but you can live for many years without complications from it. Not sure what stages your dad is in. My dad even smokes like a chain smoker. Has since he was a teenager and he's 57.

I hope and pray your dad can fight through all this!
