My theatre camp job was supposed to end on July 15 after the first session ended. I was observed yesterday, and now today the head of the performing arts section said they loved what they saw and want to extend my contract to cover the second summer session!

So basically, I get to do this all over again for July and August, except I get to choose the show I do next session, and the classes I teach will most likely be shuffled around to lean more towards musical theatre instead of simply acting.

    :celebrate:

So fun! I am surprised that your camp started so early, are they kids? Wouldn't they have been in school the last few weeks? I was curious when you first posted about it.

Either way that is so awesome that you get to do what you love!

The first week was messy. I teach high schoolers, so most of the kids were done. However, if they had to take a final exam or a Regents exam and had to miss a day, they were excused. I only had a few kids missing at any given time though, which was nice. The elementary kids and middle school kids started last week.

Would it be easier to just start later? Yeah, but time is of the essence with theatre, and we already don't have much time, so staggered time is better than none.

Oh neat! That really is great since the majority of kids have like 1 regents and sit around for 2 weeks.

    Ok...for the important question:

What show are you going to do?

Well I submitted a list of ideas to the area head. These are the ones that got an OK:

    A Chorus Line
    Company
    Follies
    Godspell
    Jane Eyre
    Rent
    Side by Side by Sondheim
    Spring Awakening

The ones that were cut were West Side Story, Music Man, Phantom, Les Mis, Avenue Q, and Into the Woods.

Didn't know there IS a Jane Eyre musical. Interesting. Rent or Spring Awakening would probably interesting for teens (I'm assuming it's an edited script). Follies had that revival on Broadway so that would get some interest. It's a shame Into the Woods didn't make the cut, but it doesn't have much of a chorus.

I vote Godspell!! It's the show that made me fall in love with theatre!! (although I am a techie...still...)

    Love Side by Side

Spring Awakening?? Ooohhhhh!! I assume more for the HS kids? :)

I like A Chorus Line too. Great discussions to be had on WHY someone does Theatre.

I love A Chorus Line and Rent. Too bad West Side Story didn't make the cut!

Yup! It hit Broadway in 2001 but didn't last long at all. It's really unfortunate because it's a beautiful show.

If they make me edit Rent or Spring Awakening, I'm not going to do them. There are too many shows out there to choose for me to settle on one and have the parts that make it great get cut. Tango Maureen, B**** of Living, Totally F*****, La Vie Boheme... all great songs that would be killed if you censored them.

Haha Godspell is great. Not at the top of my list but it's definitely under consideration. I love A Chorus Line too. I played Paul and did the choreography for my college's production a while ago.

Our numbers are supposed to drop for the next session, so all of the "big" shows were cut :(.

I'm leaning toward Company right now. Amazing music with an entertaining story.

Company is a great idea! I saw the one-night revival with Neil Patrick Harris et al and loved it. There's a clip from the Tony Awards here. Hey, you can do a little fight choreography, which should be a fun mini-workshop.

I saw Jane edge on Broadway ....had to sell 500 boxes of girl scout cookies to go on the trip...it was supposed to be suessical and they wound up switching last minute Bc of ticket problems and this was the only show the could get 80 tickets for. I was dissapointed and was in HS...the 7 yr olds were miserable. The only thing I remember was the ac was so high we were freezing the entire time.

Can you have the kids have a vote once you narrow it down to 3 or is that not feasible?

Oh yeah, Jane Eyre is totally not appropriate for 7-year-olds...

I'm totally biased, though. I loved the novel when I read it in 10th grade, and then I was in the show in 11th, and then I did my senior thesis on religious imagery in the novel in 12th.

In the show, I doubled as Brocklehurst and Rochester, so I was able to get creative going from religious nutcase Brocklehurst to brooding, mysterious Rochester. Not to mention the cross-dressing scene where I dressed as a gypsy and sung like a woman. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ma-uRLSrpc

Totally in my top 3 favorite roles .

Remember you also have to deal with which shows have available rights. Also you will have to wait for the music, etc. to be shipped, so you may need to decide so whomever in in charge of contracts can complete the application.

I was thinking that which is why I asked if voting was feasible ...I'm thinking that maybe they have rights to all those shows since theatrr is what they do.

So it turns out the rights to Company aren't available right now.

Now I have until tomorrow at 5 to let my boss know if I want to go ahead with Music Man, The Producers, or Cabaret. Leaning towards Music Man at this point.
