I finally figured out how to make an online album. Yea!

I took these pics the day before school started because I know it won't look like this for long. ;) The kids were very excited to see "The Read Carpet" and I made it even more special by "roping it off" the first 2 days of school last week.

Your room looks great! What a great reading corner idea! I'm guessing you work at a private school?...

To the questions above, yes...private Christian school.

I got the signs at my local teacher store. They have a website and will ship anywhere. Here are the links:

I didn't buy this one, but I love it! http://catalog.teachingthingsonline.com/u_turn_in_homework_large_poster-p-179795.html

The Newbery Challenge is this year's middle school reading initiative. The progress charts will track their progress. The students get a prize for each Newbery book they read, and on every 5th book, they get a larger prize. The prizes are actually privileges, like a pass to break dress code for the day (guys untuck their shirts, girls wear a hat or extra jewelry), a pass to sit with a friend at lunch (we have assigned seats to control noise), a pass to eat lunch outside, the ability to sit on the floor during class, etc. The larger prizes will be a homework pass, a free tardy, etc.

In 3 days of school last week I've already had a student read a Newbery he checked out the first day. So I guess it's working!!!

Thanks for all the comments. I'm very proud of how it turned out. By the way, underneath where the letters say "the read carpet" I will be putting up a laminated star for each student like the ones on the sidewalk in Hollywood. I'll use a dry erase marker to keep a running total of each students TOTAL number of books read. I don't want the students to only read Newbery this year.

sweet idea, the "Read Carpet". I love it!!! I do something similar, but may tweak it after seeing your idea. I have a nice rug, a sweet little coffee table, floor pillows, chinese lanterns and my bookshelves. I let students earn the right the sit there even during my class lectures.
