We've been together forever anyway, but he did it today here at my apt! No ring yet because I want to really look around thoroughly & pick out my own.
Congratulations! Hope the two of you have many more happy years together. We just celebrated our 33rd anniversary.
Congratulations!! It was so considerate of him to wait on the ring so the two of you could shop together!
Thanks a lot everyone! It will be fun gradually looking around in the jewelry stores. I have an idea of what I want. Yes, my BF knows not to just get a ring (or other big item) on his own without knowing if I'll really like it or not.
Congratulations! My DH picked out my engagement ring himself and did a great job. We each picked our own wedding bands.
Congrats!!! Still waiting for mine. You'd think 9 years together would be long enough but apparently not..
Thanks a lot again guys! I'm sure there's a lot of guys out there w/ good taste, especially when they have an idea what you want. ChildWhisperer, I hope it happens for you too.
Thanks a lot guys! Again, we've been together forever anyway & he's here & spends a lot of time w/ me that it's like he lives here already, but it's still nice. My Dad had passed away a year ago next month. I don't know if he figured that my BF & I would get married eventually, but we've been together for so long, it would have been pretty safe for my Dad to think this for years when he was still alive. We want to tell my Mom at the right time & he wants to ask for my mom's blessing. Don't know how long or short the engagement will be, probably more on the longer side (I want to look really, really thoroughly for the ring alone & haven't even thought about the dress). No date set yet, but I do love cooler weather, so probably more into the fall/winter. There's not going to be any engagement party or bridal shower. I don't have enough friends to do that anyway & I never really cared about that stuff & at this point, I just want to live happily as a married couple & (hopefully) travel around! I don't even care about a big wedding, just something very nice, but simple. Ahh, there's so much we want to do: The wedding, the rings, a trip to Japan that I want to go on (not meant for the honeymoon although it may end up being that), & a home so I can eventually get out of this extremely high rent apt. I had been thinking about this for a while now regarding the wedding...getting married in Hawaii & then just staying there for a while for the honeymoon. Who knows, maybe so!
Congrats! As for that trip to Japan, it's a wonderful idea and I'm sure you'll have a terrific time. The Japanese economy has come down a bit and you can find a lot of things more cheaply than you might expect. I believe they still have tourist railpasses -- these can let you travel all over Japan (possibly even by bullet train (shinkansen)? I forget). Only foreigners can get them, so the discounts are pretty good. My favorite cities in Japan are Osaka, Nara, and Beppu (Beppu is more "resort-ish"). You probably won't want to invest time to learn Japanese extremely well, so you should probably concentrate on just learning some key phrases and learning katakana (which is a written alphabet they use for foreign words, so once you know how the letters are pronouced , the words themselves are actually loanwords, mostly from English.) I know you're pretty conservative, so you might have trouble with a public hot spring bath -- if you still want to experience one, though, some traditional hotels have private ones (as in, you can lock the door and just let who you want in). If you need to save on hotels you could spend a night or two in an upscale capsule hotel. Wi-fi access is a bit spotty in Japan. If you're on Sprint, phone service in Japan is free (I believe it even covers some data, but I'm not sure). It's probably also a good idea to download some offline maps of the area you'll be staying.
Thank you 3Sons! I've started bookmarking sites (& added the ones you put here), subscribing to some YouTube channels about Japan travel, etc. I did want to learn to speak the language as much as possible, so I'll see how that aspect goes. If you have any other info to share, feel free to post here or PM me.
