What music should I play for my 2nd graders while they are working?

I've found that music distracts so many of them, that I stopped. WHen I did it was classical. When I tried kiddie songs, they all sang along and totally forgot what they were supposed to be working on.

Now we learn a lot using songs, but I don't just play idle music while they work. Some kids love it, but I've seen too many distracted by it.

I use Gary Lamb-60 bpm ,I think, quite often. Not always, but it seems to be calming during quiet reading. I, too, found songs with words or a faster beat could be very distracting during certain activities!

I use lots of instrumental music while they are working or reading. This group loves it! I put on instrumental Christian music which is very soothing, and they know they can't talk while the music is on. I also put on the
Beatles or some wild dance music for a 5 minute dance break regularly! Just to get some wiggles out.

I agree with bonneb. I like playing Pachelbel's Canon while kids are writing or doing something else quiet.

I also have a number of more upbeat songs for short dance breaks on days when they're needed.

    We don't play music.

But if I did, I would start with the 2 Fantasia albums.

I love those, but you'd have 2nd graders dancing around the room!

    Great music!
