So after 23 happy and successful years in the classroom, I am leaving a school I love to become an administrator next year! I'm super excited but also very nervous. It's tough going from doing something that I'm so comfortable with, and something I know I'm good at, to something that is entirely new!

    Anyway... advice? Suggestions?

Good luck, do not set up residence in the ivory tower.

    1. If you believe authentic teaching trumps drill and kill test prep as a teacher...believe it as an admin.

    2. If you hated having a ton of mandated tests as a teacher, hate it as an admin, and stand up for it.

    3. We do not need "good" people in admin who will not stand up for what they believe in because they may lose the job.

Congrats!! You will be an awesome administrator. Is it high school level?

My only advice is to be consistent. If you don't know something, tell your teachers you aren't sure, but you will ask and get back to them, then follow through.

Thank you all for the well wishes! I'm going to be an assistant principal at a middle school (6-8). I don't know specifics yet other than I'll be the admin over the ELA department. :)

AWESOME! That is my goal....eventually. My advice, as many have given already...Remember what it is like to be a teacher. Remember that we are dealing with live people and that anything and everything can and will happen.

Cannot wait to hear some stories from your POV!

Never discuss other staff members with each other. Never listen to a parent bad mouth a staff member--you can listen to complaints, but don't allow it to get ugly. Always listen to your staffs' concerns. Keep an open door policy. Become part of the community.

    Good luck!

Sounds like a great role and a lot like the AP position I first had. I made the move to administration around the same time you did in my career and I do not regret it. I'm blessed though I still teach for two periods a day.

Congrats to you! I am lucky enough to have an amazing admin team at my school, and just a few observations:

    1. Support and advocate for your teachers! If they have a concern, be willing to listen without judging. Don't automatically take a parent's side in a dispute. Furthermore, if a teacher is trying to be consistent with a disciplinary policy, please support the teacher's efforts (if it is appropriate, of course).

    2. Know what is going on in the school. I know you'll have a ton of paper to push, but make your rounds and be visible=]

The very best principals I've had were successful classroom teachers. You'll probably do a great job.

One piece of advice for you is you are going to need to really make a bunch of people feel disappointed or angry. If you hold true to running a good school, you should be fine. It may be really lonely.

Thanks for taking on this difficult job.
