From 5th. I'm a little rusty.

Remember that they really are babies at the beginning of the year! There are a lot of basic things that you can't count on them knowing how to do...like use loose-leaf paper, staplers, or tape dispensers!
3rd graders crave structure, routines and procedures, but they LOVE opportunities to demonstrate their independence. They love routines and procedures that allow them to feel as if they are "big kids". And really boost that fact that they are being treated like big kids, they'll take your management organization more seriously. Also, they still love songs, poems and all the stuff 1st and 2nd graders love. I had a lining up song I used every year and every year, those 3rd graders couldn't wait to sing it while lining up for lunch, specials etc.

Sweetest. Age. Ever.
I second everything said in the above posts. They love humor and sentimentality. They have a great ability to be empathetic.
Lining up song
Would you mind sharing your lining up song?
In the exact same boat...today (first day) was a little rocky...
Welcome to 3rd. It's such a great age to teach. They are young enough to be appreciative and old enough to get into some good meaty content areas. My advice would be to set high standards. Third graders can so a lot!
