    Hi all,

Can you add your favorite here? Mine has to be "Conrack" with Jon Voight and Hume Cronyn. It is based on the book "The Water is Wide" by Pat Conroy. Read it or see it for fun and inspiration.

Bad Teacher lol, just because it's funny. Not inspirational at all, but sometimes I feel that way.

Lean on Me has always been my favorite.

I can see how Matilda would be a good teacher movie, too.

Teachers from the 80's with Nick Nolte and Ralph Macchio.

"Half these kids won't even come back after the fire drill"

"But half of them will!"-Cheesy, I know!

The Ron Clark Story is free on YouTube too. :) I just watched it last week and loved it. The bonus is Matthew Perry being in it - I'm a huge Friends fan. :D

    I adore Mr. Holland's Opus.

I will need to try those other two movies on YouTube because I've never seen those!

While I think you'll enjoy both, I should clarify that they are very different. Marva Collins is a true teacher movie about a great teacher like most teacher movies on the list. A Touch of Greatness is not a drama, but a documentary about a teacher who has his class invite him in to see them 40 years later when he has just retired.

    1. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (It's not really a "teacher" movie, but I enjoyed the relationship between Maya Angelou and a special teacher who took an interest in her.

For those unfamiilar, Maya was brutally raped as a child. She told her brother, who told her uncles, and her uncles then killed the man. Young Maya felt guilty that her "voice" killed a man and decided never to speak again for fear it might harm someone else. She was mute five years, but one teacher didn't give up on Maya and helped her rediscover her voice).

    2. "Christie" (both the book and the movie)

    3. " Lean on Me"

    4. Mr. Holland's Opus (I always cry when Cole "hears" music for the first time)

Em, have you read the book by Angelou? I teach it in my AP class. It's very good. I highly recommend it.

My husband went to a comic con last spring (April), and met Edward James Olmos from "Stand And Deliver". He asked for his autograph at the end of the presentation and explained that he wanted it for his wife who is a teacher.

Edward James Olmos wrote the most magnificent note to me! He went and got one of his souvenir pictures and wrote the note on that and signed it. I will treasure it forever. Not just because I have always loved that movie (but also really enjoyed the "Battlestar Galactica" reboot he starred in on t.v.), but also because my husband was so proud to tell him that I was a teacher.

Edward James Olmos seems to have a ton of respect for teachers. He certainly wrote that note like he does!

I second Mr. Holland's Opus and The Ron Clark Story!

I show The Ron Clark Story on the second-to-last day of school every year (6th grade) and my kids absolutely adore it. I think it's good for them to see the teacher perspective....they especially love the scene with the chocolate milk ;)

"Detachment" with Adrian Brody is a great teacher movie. Warning: it is grim, not inspirational, feel-good stuff.

"The Emperors' Club" with Kevin Klein is another one in the prep school sub-genre (like Dead Poets').

    Hey DG,
Yup! I read it a long time ago, somewhere between 6th - 9th grade. I remember after reading the book Mom rented the movie for me to watch. I'm happy to hear that it's still being read in schools. Isn't there a sequel that picks up after Caged Bird?

I saw it a long time ago in one of my education classes and liked it.

It's a 40 year old movie that isn't shown on TV, so it's possible not many are aware of it. It can be seen on YouTube in 4 parts though.

I guess I just like Jon Voight. I also loved Mr. Holland's Opus.

    Anybody mention "Blackboard Jungle"?
