Wow! It has been an emotional roller coaster for our family this year so far. My Dad just past away on January 22nd. Things were just going back to normal when last night we got the call that my Father in law passed away.

How do you explain to a 4 1/2 year old and a little girl who turns three this Saturday that they just lost another Grandpa. They don't understand already. I already hate 2011.

I am so sorry! Your kids are at the age where you may think they understand but they don't really. My mother-in-law died when my son had just turned 5 and he asked questions for over a year that made us realize he didn't really get it. There are some good children's books that explain death if you think they may help.

That is so hard for anyone. I recommend finding some children's books as well as some books that are meant for parents to help children understand loss. I went to talk to a grief counselor through Hospice a couple of months ago and they had several books to check out- you can always check the library.

Know that you are not alone.....

Are you Christian? God helps me no matter what I'm facing in life.

I am so sorry for you and your family. Yes, books help a lot. I especially like "Why Did Grandpa Have to Die?"

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers during this awful time. I am going to look into getting some books, thank you for the suggestions.

Tennisplayer- yes I am a Christian. That is what made it easier to let my dad go. I also lost a daughter over five years ago. So it helps to know that she has her Grandpa's now.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I certainly hope you are able to help your young ones through this. It's both a blessing (though I use that term very loosely) and a curse that they don't fully grasp what has happened, if that makes sense. And of course you and your husband...what a horrible time for you both. :hugs:

Christians are not the only ones who believe in God.
