That's the way I feel, too. To me, it looks like "Mrs." is saying "Mister's". It is like saying men always have the same status but women don't...and I don't get why. I didn't know it was supposed to be a feminist title.
Knittingbec, I too use Ms. I teach middle school and am old enough to be the parent of my students. I didn't take my husband's name when we married (it's a weird name and middle school children would have lots of fun making fun of me). Several of my students were really confused by "Ms." and several took it to mean that I'm not married. Even with the big sparkly ring! As an aside, I have explained this to my kids and some of them have taken to calling me "Mrs MyHusband'sLastName" just to be silly.
I was the only teacher unmarried at the school so they kept calling me Miss. I did ask the administration to call me Ms. and that helped but the kids call me Mrs. so, I guess it doesn't really matter
