Miserable Mondays...the start of a "tuff",long, and stressful week.

On mondays I find my students "not with it" and really,REALLY, QUIET!!!!! To me...its great! An easy day! Right?

One thing. . .I cannot get them to participate on anything! I really do not like just calling on someone that does not have their hand raised.

Any tips to get students involved and to make these mondays more enjoyable and exciting?

    thanks!

My kids have trouble with being tired on Mondays too, but one thing I do is have a jar with popsicle sticks in it. Each stick has a students' name. That way, they never know when they are going to be called on and the ones that raise their hands all the time know that others need a turn too. Just an idea! We do a LOT of movement on Mondays because they are tired and not paying attention!

When my kids start to zone out, we all do 10 jumping jack to get the blood pumping. This works really well at perking them up.

I'm doing something new this year that I hope to continue since it's working so well....

Mondays are no longer everything NEW day. I do my reading stories from Tuesday-Monday...spelling units from Thursday-Wednesday etc. This way students aren't diving into all brand new material on Monday when they are tired and frankly so am I!! It's made Mondays a lot more enjoyable and also has helped energize those often overwhelming middle of the week days too!

What a good idea! I do my spelling units Wed.-Tues. but I haven't tried it with other subjects yet.

I rely on review games to get them more invested.

I think tomorrow (Monday) will be a terrific day. That's because I'm taking the day off to go jeeping. :D :D :D

If my kids are getting sleepy, I have them all get up and take a couple walking laps around the room. They really enjoy it and mine will usually start doing the congo or something as they go around the room! As long as they're still walking as they do the congo, I let it go for a few moments and then tell them to return to their seats. It's amazing how much more energy they suddenly have!
