Why are they so darn expensive for something that is 18 minutes long?!? I don't mind paying $15-$20 but I'm sure not going to pay $40-$80 for them!

I looked at some in a mailing I got and couldn't believer the prices either! I don't know why they're so expensive, but I won't be buying any either.

It's not just videos. It's all things educational. Try getting software or games. I remember wanting to have the school order me a couple of Connect 4 games. We had to use an approved vendor, who wanted $20 for the game. I wound up spending my money at Toys R Us and spent $12 for two games. Software is the same way, which is ridiculous when you consider the dozens of places you can get great educational titles for s/h or at greatly reduced costs. I remember getting a Reader Rabbit title for $5.99 s/h only while an approved vendor wanted $29.oo for the same thing.

Its nice if you have a video store nearby who carries what you are looking for...then you just have to rent it:)

I agree that the prices stink! Try checking out ebay or half.com for some cheaper prices...other than that, I don't have much advice. I just beg my school librarian to order some every year:D

Our school subscribes to United Streaming ... http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/

You can get a 30 day trial for free. Download or stream via your classroom computer, whole videos or just segments. More and more supplemental material is being added too. I hardly ever look anywhere else for videos.

It is AWESOME! Even though it has the Discovery Channel backing, it is not just Discovery Channel documentaries.

My school also uses United Streaming. I absolutely love it! I am pretty much able to find videos on every unit I teach. It also tells you what grade levels they are appropriate for. Love it, love it, love it! Did I mention I love it?

    http://www.discoveryeducation.com/products/streaming/purchase.cfm

This page has the subscription costs. Pass it on to your tech people or library media specialists ... I suspect they will think it is a deal if they understand that other services could be eliminated. It looks expensive to an individual teacher, but across an entire school it would save money.
