Just out of curiosity, are any of you fellow 5th grade teachers also in a middle school? Or, if you're in an elementary school, are you departmentalized?

This is my first year teaching 5th grade and we're in the middle school site of a prek-8 charter school. I'll be teaching reading to my homeroom and writing to all of the 5th graders (4 classes). It's pretty uncommon to have 5th grade in a middle school around here, though so I'm just curious about how things work other places.

5th grade is in an elementary school and yes we are departmentalized (we start in 3rd).

I teach language arts/social studies to my homeroom and one other class. We have 2 teachers who teach lang arts/ss, 1 teacher teaches all the math and 1 teaches all the science.

I teach 5th and we are in a 5/6 Intermediate School. Sixth is departmentalized while fifth is not.

I also teach at a pre k-8 charter school in Baltimore but that setup is becoming the norm in the city, not the exception. Since I work at a really small school (I only have 11 students right now!), we are not departmentalized.

I'm in an elementary and we're not departmentalized. I'm in a small rural school and our elementary goes through 7th grade and 8th grade is in the high school.

Departmentalized last two years, this year we added a teacher and couldn't make it work. So I'm the only one who teaches all the subjects. It would have worked if one of us had volunteered to teach writing to all of them, but no one will do that. I hope you know what you're doing. It's a lot of work, a lot of reading, a lot of individual attention. Good luck, really.
