    Hello,
New to the board-excited to be using it.
    Here's the problem.
I have a group of struggling readers who are expected to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. There is no way that is going to happen in terms of their decoding or comprehension levels.
Do people have suggestions about how they have handled this kind of situation? Some have suggested tapes but the tapes that have been provided have readers that speak so fast that it is extremely hard to follow. For The Giver, I constructed a reader's theater. But that was extremely time-consuming and this book is much longer.
What other suggestions do folks have out there? I could always break the rules and read a simpler book-The Friendship- and focus on the benchmarks.
    What are folks doing?

For struggling readers, using books on tape can be a great way to have them practice higher level skills like comprehension, drawing conclusions, etc. That way you aren't just assessing them on how well they decode. Some of my tapes are a bit fast, but when the kids follow along with the book, it seems to work just fine.

Are all the students struggling readers? If so, I would read the book aloud to them and discuss as you go. I would provide graphic organizers or journal activities with each chapter.

Abbreviations are used often to make it easier & quicker to respond on here. It took me awhile to get used to it. ;)
