Middle school ELAR classroom questions

    I have a 2nd interview tomorrow for a English teaching position. It's either 6th or 8th grade...not sure which one. I'll be interviewing with the team of teachers.

    I wondered from those that teach this age and subject-

    How do you have your classroom set up?

    What do you use in your centers?

    How do you structure your class periods- spliiting time between reading, writing, and grammar?

    Dear Newtothis2006: I taught the same classes and at the same school for 18 years and then our family moved and I was faced with the interview process. One thing that I did not prepare well for was the question of - How will you manage the special needs students that are "all inclusive" in the classroom these days. What modifications do I use, how would I modify, etc. etc. Of course I had dealt with the situation during my 18 years of teaching, but being prepared for that question at an interview is another case indeed. Just a word of advice. Good luck.

    I teach 7th grade most years, but I've taught 6th and 8th in the past. My class is pretty "regular". Here are some photos from my classroom at the beginning of this school year. They've mounted my SmartBoard since then, and I've added two bookshelves under the windows in the back, but it's basically the same.

    I don't use centers. In fact, nobody in our building uses centers.

    We have a state-mandated curriculum, and that's what we teach . . . that and the state program of studies for our grade & subject. It's reading and writing only . . . not grammar. Any grammar needs they have are taught in mini-lessons or daily oral language/language warm-ups. All of their writing assignments come directly from their reading assignments, so it's like I'm teaching everything at the same time. Some days they do some of everything and sometimes just one . . . depends on their needs.
