My district has eliminated all media specialists, and instead is hiring non-certified media aides to run the libraries. Crazy, I know. I have a good friend who is interviewing for the media aide position at the beginning of July. I am trying to help her prepare for the interview and was wondering what types of interview questions she might encounter. Anyone been there/done that who can provide some info?

    Thanks,

I hate to hear this! A few districts around here have done this as well.

I'm assuming her responsibilities will be to check in/out all books-hopefully you are automated and not still using a card catalog.

She will probably have to shelve all the books as well- so an understanding of how the books are put away would be helpful. *dewey decimal for non fiction and alphabetical for fiction.

    Good Luck to her!

Probably a knowledge of books as well to help kids find the right books. Maybe organizing a schedule for teachers to check out books in the library.

What about teaching a lesson to each class? Do you think that would be something the aide would be required to do like the librarian used to?

Our aides are not allowed to teach lessons unless it is a review lesson. So, you may need to teach how to use the library and keep it organized. But otherwise, I can't see teaching as a responsibility because you aren't hired to teach.

But if there is no librarian, and there is only a full-time media aide, wouldn't she be the one to read the to the kids and help them with their research and perform those type of "teaching" duties?

She could read stories to the kids. However, I think that the classroom teacher would need to teach how to research and such and the library aide would be helping the kids, not teaching.

I would look into the duties of an "aide" Check the school district contract.

Here in NY, Aides are not to be left alone with children. Teacher Assistants can read books, but a certified teacher or Librarian must write the lesson plan=tell the aide what they are reading.

Typically in the the schools that are without a certified library media specialist, the aide is only there for the classroom teachers to bring their class down and the aide will check in/out books. It will be the classroom teachers responsibility to instruct the students.
