What exactly was the crime, here? I mean, sure taping up some letters can be annoying, but I see people taping/stapling signs in public places all the time. I mean, really, what is the crime here? Just a sweet looking boy asking a girl to the prom in a fun way. Pish Posh. What a prudish school.
I have to admit the school admin does come off sounding prudish and overly controlling. It's like they are dangling the prom as a Sword of Damocles over the students. You mess up at school and we won't let you go to the prom. This was the punishment for 6 students that piled into an elevator with other friends, causing it to stall between floors. In the case of the letters posted on the front of the school, a more appropriate consequence might have been letting young Mr. Tate mop ALL the floors in the school as an atonement for defacing the school in the first place. When I was a junior in high school, several seniors decided to suddenly bolt from school during lunch and spend the afternoon at the lake. This was on a Friday, near the end of the school year. As a consequence, the P and VP made all the offending parties work together and wash every single window in the school as their punishment. Needless to say, the seniors learned their lesson.
They said it was considered tresspassing. Does not seem like he entered any buildings, just walked onto the property. Since when is walking up to the front of a school building tresspassing. All of the schools I grew up around people could walk up to and play on the playgrounds after school hours, walk around and sit on the benches, etc. This is rediculous.
It was at my HS. Only 50/279 students showed up Around 1/4 to 1/2 of the seniors absent got arrested by the police when a party that seniors ditching from area schools got busted. I believe as punishment, the school gave the students who were arrested by the police Two 2 hour detentions and weekly group counseling with the Substance Abuse Counselor for the rest of the school year (i.e. standard procedure)
What were they arrested for? Ahh, substance abuse counselor? Got it. I agree if students are doing senior ditch day to go drink, that is not good.
I think thats ridiculous. The school needs to pick their battles. As for "senior ditch day"- ours was school sanctioned. Lame, haha. School was optional for seniors that day and they held a field day type thing for those that went to school anyway.

That was my line of thinking... maybe misguided but he had a good purpose. I agree with the suggestion of mopping or something. This is a little bit of an overreach.
It makes me think of our Physics teacher in HS. The teachers had to give the students an opportunity to make up any work from that day. So he would give a test on ditch day with one question on it-what is the date? When they took it the following day, their answer was incorrect. I agree-punishment definitely doesn't fit the crime.
This is happening in a district very close to where I am from in Connecticut. I know the area and the community well. He has offered to do community service and has been denied. He will be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live according to local news in CT. They also say that he is planning on getting dressed up before the prom and taking pictures, then waiting until after and going to the after prom festivities. I think this is terrible. He is an honors student and honestly thought that he was doing something sweet. I hope that the district will reconsider before the prom.
We had all kinds of creative ways to ask someone to prom displayed this year. One was covering her car with sticky notes, one of which said, "Prom?" on it. Several teachers helped by putting prom invitations in presentations or as questions on tests. It's just a cute thing our kids do. It may distract from school a little, but it is also a fun way to let the kids contribute to the environment of the school. The only things kids can be barred from prom are: fighting (barred from all school activities for the year,) being on the debt list (we collect a lot of money at prom) or if it's a date from another school, being too old or having a bad discipline record.

Kozlowsky admits he doesn't know the details. and therefore can't really comment on the situation. Guess who has my respect?? 3. ' So this punishment isn't limited to this one student; it's apparently a fairly well known way of keeping the Seniors in line at that school. So perhaps it could have been anticipated??? Is it fair? I have no idea. But I'm not basing my opinon on one article, particularly THIS article. And for the record, as one might expect, my school does NOT have a Senior Ditch Day. Neither does my husband's.
Yep. If the admin really felt the need to punish the boy for this, then I think some form of "creative punishment" would have been more appropriate.
I like this! I agree the punishment is a bit much. Maybe I am biased because the kids at the HS I worked at did this kind of stuff for prom (the teachers and admins even helped them decorate!). I think the 1-day suspension is enough. I feel sorry that this kid who has worked hard up until now will miss his senior prom over something like this. There are probably so many kids in that school who do worse stuff on a daily basis that will get to attend and he won't.

I know private schools and charter schools use the term but a Public school, is this a New England thing?
Sounds like the mom needs kudos. She isn't crying about how unfair the situation is, isn't threatening to sue, isn't going to yank him out of the school. "We'll let everything play out, but we don't know what the next chapter might be," she said. "He's 18. We're lifelong learners and this is an especially critical time for young men." :clap:

In regards to senior skip day, my school cracked down when it was my class' "year." They threatened to give anyone who didn't show up to school, or who arrived late (most students talked about going out for breakfast and then coming to school), detention. I was supposed to have a doctor's appointment that day and I had my mom reschedule it because I was worried I'd get in trouble even though I had a valid excuse!
