As a math teacher I hate to show movies (I feel in a math class there is little educational value from a movie). However, saying that with Minnesota standardized tests coming up we have testing half the day, and classes the rest of the half. The second half of the day I would like to show my classes a movie. Any suggestions for an 8th grade math class? I was thinking Stand and Deliver.....
Don't ask me where I pulled this one from, but how about Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052751/ I have no idea whether you can get it, but I vaguely remember it from somewhere.
I've showed that to classes in previous years. I personally think it's somewhat outdated and elementary for 8th grade....but I'll keep it in mind
Sorry about that...I probably remembered seeing it when I was a kid, and we all know how long ago THAT was
What is the title of that modern Albert Einstein movie with Meg Ryan?? Have you thought about showing an episode of Numbers? There is curriculum that goes along with it - but may be more for older students.
Also, I will try and find out the title of the program, but I remember watching a program that involved a man and a woman who both wore blue blazers that solved crimes using math ...
That would be "MathNet" ("The story you are about to see is a fib, but it's short..."), and that was a segment of the math program Square One on PBS. It was on the air - let me see: fifteen years ago? I don't know whether Square One is still airing, but it might be worth checking the PBS Web site (http://www.pbs.org).
