    Elementary grade:
Say two students use the exactly same nonstandard objects to measure the same string. Somehow, they both get completely different answers. What are possible reasons? I could come up with the possibilities of spaces or overlaps. What do you think?

What was their nonstandard Unit? Did you double check? Could it be one was measuring using the long side of the object and the other used a short side? (ex: the 3" side of an index card vs the 5" side?)

They were using small paper clips.

So could it be one measured lengthwise and the other widthwise? Did you observe them measuring? How far ff were the two estimates? We're both paper clips exactly the same size?

Did one student pull the string tight and the other let the string hang more loose? I just finished several lessons with this concept. But most of my kids, were within +2 or, -2 of each other.

    Lengthwise. 3 paper clips difference.

I observed them letting the string hang loose. They must have not lined up the paper clips at the end of the string...
