Hey all. I work with some seventh graders who are reading far below grade level -- they are basically emerging readers. I use a great phonics program with them, but I'm struggling to find reading material for them that isn't obviously for babies. I know there has to be something out there...can you give me some ideas for resources?? I've had no luck googling. Thanks. =)
What phonics program are you using? My sixth graders who were reading far below grade level loved these: http://www.highnoonbooks.com/index-hnb.tpl.
Re: materials for older students There are adapted chapter books that based on popular books, but simplified. It uses more picture support and chapters are 1-2 pages ,but follows the story line. It contains grade level vocabulary, but not a lot. Google UNCC and there is a site titled GCA/RWMS that has adapted books. This one requires a disk for the pics, but has a word version without pics. Another site, Paul V Shelock adapted books, click on left side adapted literature. This does not require anything special. For my low students I use pictures for characters, setting, cause/effect etc..........
