Would you make your 6th to 8th graders participate in a District Wide spelling bee if are not great spellers, and don't want to go?

If it's not required of students, I wouldn't force anyone to do it.

That's right, if it isn't required I wouldn't force them. I would encourage them to try though.

I have no idea if it is required. My aide told them they had to go. But I'm not sure, if they have to or not. I suppose I'll have to ask my principal. And I suppose if their parents say no than they won't have to go since it is at night. I don't even want to go lol. I hate going out in the dark and it's 40 mins away. It is an hour for some students.

I allow my kids to volunteer for the Spelling Bee... even some of the good spellers do not want to participate. I figure it is up to them. I do stress the value of going though and have them all taken the written test. After the test, if they want to participate they turn in their paper to be graded, and should they not want to try-out they simply throw it away.

Yes... in our school the policy is to start with a written test (it is not entered in the grade book). We have 25 words we pick from the Script Spelling Bee list. The top 10 spellers in each class go to the rounds process.

The fact that it's at night and not local makes it easy. Some kids may not be able to go-- if only parent is home at night or there's only one car.

I say you strongly encourage, but leave it at that.

The bus is picking them up at their houses. It has to drive by their houses to get to our school and has to drive by their houses to get to the school the competition is at.

Are they expected to participate fully, or are they allowed to observe?

Participation in the spelling bee is NOT a requirement here. Each classroom has a spelling bee, and then the classroom winners go to the school-wide bee. After that, there is a district bee.

Some of the really good spellers don't want to be in it, so I don't make them. This year one of my girls said that she really didn't want to be in it because she'd won twice before. Also, some are really, really bad and it's just plain embarrassing. I'm a decent speller . . . on paper. I'm lucky to spell my own name aloud. In fact, the kids have learned to bring me a piece of paper and pencil if they want me to spell something for them. LOL

We are able to send four students from the school in grades 6 to 8. I only have four students from 6th and up.

It came out on DVD late summer of 2006. We showed it to the 6th graders and it was really great. I went out and bought it the next day. It's very inspirational and shows the hard work that goes into being a champion speller. As I recall, it's PG for a few harsh words.
