I mentioned on another thread recently about an activity I was going to be doing with my students on the second day of school using The Important Book. I read the book to the students and then had them write a page about themselves so that we could make our own important book. Well, before I had them write on their own we worked on an example one together on the board. I used myself as the example and had the students give me ideas of what to write. This is what my third graders came up with:

The important thing about Ms. R. is that she is a great teacher.
    She is nice and talented.
She has great hair and she has a very lovely voice,
But the important thing about Ms. R. is that she is a great teacher.

I told them that they were all fishing for A's, but they really did make my day. :)

Beth2004...they sure do know how to make you smile. :)

I just used that same book and activity with my first graders this week. We did it the day of open house. I put what they wrote about themselves next to their picture on the outside bulletin board for their parents to see.

It was so cute to see some of the things 6 year olds think are important!

That book is also grat for fact and opinion. The first and last sentence is an oopinon on each page and the in between sentences are facts....(at least that's how I'm remembering it....)

I don't think that is the case with all of the pages. Here is what it says on the page about rain:

"The important thing about rain is that is is wet. It falls out of the sky, and it sounds like rain, and makes things shiny, and it does not taste like anything, and is the color of air. But the important thing about rain is that it is wet."

I think it would be good to use for fact and opinion by pulling apart each page and selecting which phrases are facts and which ones are opinions. I hadn't thought of it before, but I may just use it for that a little later on in the year!

Carmen! I haven't seen you on here in a while!
Yes, I did get a job at a private school. It wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, but I am in my own 3rd grade classroom. If nothing else, it will be a year of experience on my resume for when I'm applying to public schools again next year.

Well, saying that the IMPORTANT thing about rain is that "it is wet" is an opinion, I think. Maybe I think the important thing about rain is I have to be prepared for inside recess.

When you say 'the important thing about----- is...', it's an opinion even if what you are saying is true. (rain is wet is a fact, the important thing about rain is it is wet is an opinion.....)
