Well, Tuesday night my two children and I rode the tornado out in the closet of my master bedroom. We had our roof destroyed and the tornado took out about 50 trees on our two and half acres. Our contractor feels that our roof was lifted and sat back down. Our neighbors were trapped in their storm shelter and we had to help dig them out. I am have sunburn, am sore, and dead tired; but we are pulling our life back together. Our house got electricity back on today. My roof was replaced yesterday. So now it is time to clean the freezers and icebox and cleaning our house. Lots of limbs down. Fence gone. and lots of trees down that need to be moved.

How terrifying? Do you have a storm shelter, and just didn't have enough warning to get there?

Wow! I'm so glad that you are okay!! What was it like to be in the closet during this time? And I also wonder if you have a shelter or did you just not have time to get down there. I'm with Ms. I. I'm glad that the worst I need to worry about are earthquakes (well, that and now, nuclear meltdown where I live now).

    glad you are safe

We spent about an hour in our basement Wednesday night. We were without power from about 9:30pm til 6:45am. Lots of damage all around but none to our house directly. I had to take a really round-about way to work Thursday morning as there were huge trees down everywhere.

The tornado turned quickly...I don't have a shelter, but it was too late to go anywhere. I put the kids in the closet. My 8 year old had a bike helmet and lots of pillows and quilts. My 17 year old laid on her and I laid on him. It lasted about ten minutes but felt longer. Loud whistling sound...the roof lifted three or four times...and felt like the air was being sucked from the room. We lost about 50 trees and fence and roof. We are safe. The electricity came back on last night. Getting back to semi-normal.

So HAPPY you are all safe!!! How did the animals do?!?!

We locked the sheep in the barn about 15 minutes before it hit and they were fine. The dog we just let him out and he went to the barn. We couldn't find the cat, so he was the smartest of us all. (He showed up the next day.) All vehicles, animals, and major property is fine. Roof was replaced in three days (a fabulous friend rearranged his work crew to help us out), lots of trees gone, we have maybe 20% picked up and we have worked everyday since Tuesday, my mother cleaned my icebox (electricity off three days), and we are getting back to normal. We will be all summer cleaning the trees and replacing fence.

It sounds like you have a great attitude for such a scary event. My husband's family moved from Indiana when their chicken farm took a direct hit by a tornado and they didn't have the money to fix it or keep going. Chicken parts for miles was the family joke. My husband was 2 and his mom had sit him in his high chair while she ran around securing things outside but the tornado was faster than they thought. He saw the whole thing (house was safe). He doesn't remember anything but it must have been traumatic because they said he stopped talking for several months.

I don't really remember...I just remember the roof being lifted and it sounding like someone shuffling cards--that happened like 3/4 times, trees hitting the house and a train whistle sound... then afterwards an weird silence--dead silence. It got dark right before it hit and then bright right after. This is the third major tornado I have lived through. The first, I was in 2nd grade and we lived in the Red River basin and it came right over our house. It hit Wichita Falls, Texas first. The 2nd was the May 3rd and I was in an underground house with my husband, kindergarten son, and friends. The firefighters that were talking to the news people were with us. I lived at Bridge Creek at the time. I am not a fan of tornadoes.

So thankful you and your family are safe. It's definitely been a difficult week here in Oklahoma. We spent Tuesday in the neighbor's cellar. There was a short touchdown a few miles from our house, so we escaped damage this time. The school were my daughter teachers has some damage but could have been much worse. I agree with one of the other posters, nurture yourself a bit. Tree limbs and fence will come. Take care and let's pray that's the end of the storm season for everyone!

    So glad you're safe, mrachelle!

You too INteacher--I was thinking of you. The winds luckily had died down a bit by the time it got to us, but I still huddled with my couch cushions in the bathroom. We had a field trip on Thursday and had to take a round-about way up to Bloomington--drove right past the Beford tornado, and there were trees down all over Bloomington, including the IU campus.
