    I was one of those kids who apparently entered 1st grade reading. I also seem to be aware enough that when encountering new words, I was approaching it more or less with phonics, despite not knowing the rules I now know. In other words, I was an aware enough reader in some regards to have observed some general commonalities in different words.

    I also have heard tales of parents with kids with dyslexia and the like who gave up on phonics and found success with other reading approaches.

    Certainly agreed about the homogeneity - I've never seen it ;)
