This is the lowest group I've had, ever. I teach 4th, and I only have two kids who read at grade level. I have a couple around 1.5; several in the second grade level, a couple in the third grade range. Going to be a long year. I don't even know where to start. I'm using stuff I used at the beginning of last year, and it's too high. I feel like I have to completely revamp. :(

Back to basics: intense phonics instruction, decodable books, high frequency words, etc.

Do you have a set of sound/spelling cards that you can request from admin (or whoever takes care of ordering books/materials)?

You might just have to class read all the other core stuff (science, social studies, etc) and use your LA time for the how-to read stuff. Hard because by 4th grade the curriculum tends to have learning to read out of the way. I'd hit up the lower grades for materials and lesson plans. In fact, I'd be happy to help you out.

Thanks! I might definitely take you up on that. Yeah, by 4th I think kids should know letter sounds, etc. I think that's something that is frustrating me. Oh, well. It is what it is.

At least with subjects like science and social studies, you can modify their reading levels to teach concepts and vocabulary. But like others have shared, go back to the basics. I was a struggling reader in 1st and 2nd grade and it wasn't until my tutor helped me through the basics that I finally was able to read and write.

You may need to borrow some baskets of books from lower grades for your lw readers. Form guided reading groups and deliver focused instruction to the groups based on their needs. Document all interventions and progress! Is there a paper trail on these kiddos already?

Indeed! I probably wouldn't give much thought to a kid reading at a third grade level, but I'd imagine those still at 2nd and 1st grade levels would already be noted down at this point.

Two of my lowest are move ins. I looked in their files because I really thought they might be on an IEP. All I could find were copies of their previous assessments from their former school, so I guess the paper trail starts with me.

That sounds like my class a couple years ago. Sorry you're going through that! I differentiated with morning work and centers, and did lots of spiral review.

Start that paper trail asap, and see if you can get the kiddos into reading/math intervention groups. If you have parent volunteers, get them in the classroom to work with groups during centers.

Also, one thing that really helped my low students with reading/writing activities is portable word walls. You can print the pages off on teacherspayteachers and attach them to file folders.
