Hello all, I know a lot of us are stressed out. I myself am flustered to say the least. It took me 2 years after I graduated to find a job. I sent out over 100 resumes, only to get 3 interviews. I finally landed my first job and I love it. I love the people I work with and my kids are awesome. I've been there 2 years, with great observations and a bright future ahead. That was until I received my RIF notice last week. Because of our new teacher hating governor, I'm out of the job I love. I had no idea what i was going to do. I analyzed my situation and started applying to different districts, including one on a tropical island in the Caribbean. After 2 interviews and a quick visit, I was offered the job, and in 2 months I will begin the next phase of my teaching career in paradise. Just want everyone out there to keep your head up and know that there is something out there for you. I think I need to get away from this teacher bashing in my state for a couple years and explore the rest of the world. Good luck to everyone

Congratulations. This is my first year teaching in Mexico (can't seem to get a job in CA), and I love it! Sometimes, you just have to be daring and willing to take risks. Congrats to you!

If you have to be RIFed, might as well end up in Paradise. Good Luck! I am jealous, especially with the snow we had today.

Wow. What tropical island will you be moving to? I have a friend that went to Asia and has spent 5 years teaching in an International School. He loves it. He met his wife there and is married now. It was a fantastic move for him. On the plus side, he is not considered very tall by our standards. But over in Asia, he is an average sized guy. He told me that sometimes he even feels like a giant! LOL. Happy is me for you! :)

I'm so super jealous. I couldn't get my husband to move to an island even if it meant I had a job waiting for me. Congrats and post pictures of your island paradise!

I'm super jealous. I'm not a water girl but the waters over there are just AWESOME. Even my non-swimming husband was hugely attracted to the ocean over in the Caribbean waters. Wherever you are going specifically... have you been there yet?

Tropical island sounds awesome. I am also a NJ teacher- there are many teachers who are losing thier jobs due to budget cuts. There are also many teachers retiring because of possible upcoming changes to pension funding formula, health care, etc...Those retirements will hopefully open up opportunities for those who have been let go or RIF'd.

Congrats on the new job in paradise! Will you be teaching history there too?

We just lost 6 non-tenured teachers on Friday due to the budget cuts. Others were let go in the district...that was just our school :( Its a rough time in NJ, but hopefully things will get better.

Yah it's pretty bad in NJ. I figure I'll go down there for a couple years and wait for things to get a little better.
