I have a 2000 Toyota 4Runner with 156K on it. Hoping to run it into the ground as well. DH is obsessive with maintenance on the cars, oil changes, tuneups etc., so I am hoping it will last a long time, I really like it.

It is supposedly like 29 miles/gallon...but I don't think so....actually I know its not bc it tells you how many miles per gallon you are getting...I'm getting like low 20's but I drive about 45 minutes one way also and a lot of traffic!

My f-i-l is in the car business. He told me that Hyundai vehicles have the worst trade in values. They are such an inexpensively made car that they really need that warranty. He said they really offer almost nothing on them because there isn't a secondary market for them. They have a hard time moving them at the auctions. Just something to consider.

I have a 2009 Honda Fit and I LOVE it! IT gets great mileage, is roomy (the seats fold up in the back to help you put packages on the floor) and is a hatchback.

I love my Jeep Liberty. It is my pirate ship and I am the captain. Together, we drive the highways. It was love at first sight and I'll just keep replacing parts until dh says 'enough!'.

I love my Town & Country van. It has room for all the stuff that I like to drag around with me.

We purchased the maintenance package that gives us 4 years of oil changes and I would not do that again. The price of each service is well reduced from what we would pay just to take it to a place like Jiffy Lube, but it is an absolute pain to take it to the dealer (which is about 30 miles away), leave it for the day, and get myself to school. The cost of the train and a cab when I have to take the car in almost makes the total what I would have paid to have the oil changed in 20 minutes on my way home. I wish we could turn in the package and get a refund on the unused service, but that won't happen.

I have a little obsession for VW's. They remind me of my hometown and my favorite is the VW Rabbit. They're a little overpriced for a compact car although VW's are known to be of great quality. As soon as my little 2002 dodge neon kicks the bucket I'm getting me a Rabbit.

Side Note: I'm driving an '82 Mercedes. The darn thing keeps running so I can't give it up yet - it has about 200k miles (the odometer broke about 5 years ago). I keep replacing it with parts, too. As long as the repair parts are cheaper than what I'd pay for a new car, I'll keep it up. I know, one day, the cost of the part I have to buy will push me into buying a new car, so I'm always interested in threads like this.

Back to this thread: My husband drives a '99 Toyota Tacoma. It's been a great purchase. We keep up the maintenance and it still runs great - even after he pushed it to it's limits while working as a landscaper. I am a big fan of Toyota.

What helped us make our decision when we bought the Tacoma was it's rating in a Car/Truck magazine that reviewed all the trucks we were looking at. The truck we almost bought was rated a 3, and the Tacoma was rated a 9! This information was really helpful.

I'd suggest that once you're down to a few choices, read the professional reviews.

Another thing that helped us decide was test driving the trucks we liked. The feel of the Tacoma was better than the same-priced other make. And the interior was higher quality.

Thanks for the responses! I have decided to wait on buying the new car. I am going to save up for a couple of months and buy a new to me used car with low mileage. My plan is to get a car that I can pay off quickly and then save up a lot of money for a brand new car with low monthly payments. I guess I am stuck driving a manual for a little while longer.

I had an RSX too and loved it. I took it to Carmax for a quote and got a lot more than I expected for it. I had to trade it in because I needed a larger car - I got a Honda Pilot.

Both of my parents have Honda CRVs (2005 & 2007). They are reliable cars - my parents drive from Washington to soCal and back every couple of months and have not had any problems. They also say that they get really good gas mileage.

Good luck with your car search!

    Congratulations!

I have an '03 Forester and I love it! My dad, stepdad, stepmom, and fiancé all drive Subarus. They're extremely reliable and I love the AWD. Most importantly I feel safe in my car, it's solid and well-built.
