We like the doc abt Redwood trees. It was by National Geo and we were in awe. Ilike documentaries, comedies, and others but nothing violent.
Have you seen or heard about the tv series, Pushing Daisies? My friend got me into the show. Read the summary and the reviews and see if it's something that you may be into. I like it because it's weird and different and it has this surreal feel to it. I've also been watching Ugly Betty, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How the Earth Was Made, The Universe, and Glee.
I just signed up for Netflix myself. I chose the unlimited DVD's as well as unlimited streaming. I had been thinking about an account for a long time, but finally took the plunge after we finished our state testing and I realized we would probably spend much of the remaining school days watching movies or shows in the classroom. I also hope to work in our district's Summer Camp and we usually watched a movie each day there as well (usually during "rest time" after lunch). Also, I get my boys for a full week at a time during the summer (every other week) and they all like to watch movies, so this will make it easier, provide a wider variety and avoid several extra trips to the local video store each week. We've already watched several TV shows and 3 or 4 movies in the first week alone. :thumb:
Off the top of my head, I really liked the documentary Helvetica. It's all about the font Helvetica, I found it very interesting. I agree with Peach that Pushing Daisies is a great tv show. If you like British comedies they have Dr. Who and The IT Crowd. I went on to see what else I have watched to give more suggestions but the new Netflix layout is so horrible that I can't stand to look at it.
Netflix is my new love. I've recently watched some great movies. Trick r treat (great for horror movie fans) Toy Story 3 (just a lovely movie all around. Tears at the end, but happy again) Shutter Island (takes place in the 50's. I had to wonder sometimes why I was watching this. Oh yeah because of Leonardo! I did get the hang of the movie and the twist was phenomenal. As a psych major I believe what happened is totally plausible in real life and I'm sure there are some documented cases of such)
I felt pretty stupid that I had to ask my hubby to explain the ending to me. It was very strange. I do love Netflix but I wish they had more Play Now movies. I can't order the DVDs because we share the account with my in laws and they get the DVDs sent to their house.
Streaming Netflix (from what I read) doesn't support captions. So I use Hulu instead. Lately I've gotten into Korean Dramas. They typically involve some love triangle. What's interesting is how much cleaner they are in comparison to our shows. SO refreshing!
I watch a wide variety of things on Netflix. My current favorite is Parenthood, but I have watched the entire How I Met Your Mother series and I am starting on Big Bang Theory.
I see Disney's Oceans is on the streaming... I really want to see that. If you haven't seen the sorcerer's apprentice it's on streaming & cute. My gram said The King's Speech was good.
I'm pretty sure streaming shows or movies on Netflix DO support captions. My mom is hard of hearing, so we always have the caption on when watching TV. I'll check it for sure this afternoon, but I do think the caption works for streaming. Of course, Hulu is good too. :thumb:
Maybe it is the ones that come in the mail that don't have it. All I know is I read only about 100 titles of theirs has it, but I don't remember if it was streaming or mail. Maybe it is outdated information. Wouldn't THAT be great.
I love Netflix! I'm watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager now (I stream that one onto my computer when BF is playing xbox). Together we are watching 3rd Rock From the Sun (streaming on the xbox) and we are getting the DVD's for News Radio in the mail. We get 1 DVD out at a time plus unlimited streaming. I don't know what I'd do without Netflix.
I was also going to suggest Disney's Oceans. We just watched The King's Speech which I liked. And I know it's not on DVD yet but we saw Bridesmaids in the theater and it was so funny.
Blue, I'm no good at figuring out movies, ever. What I did towards the end of Shutter Island was read parts of the plot while they are happening or after they have happened in the movie. It's a weird thing to do but when I have to keep pausing a movie to tend to the little one & to cook and make phone calls, I really get lost. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_Island_(film) It explains everything in detail. I just love Leonardo, I can't say that enough
My mom and I share an account. Because she is hearing impaired, the DVD's go to her and I just watch the play it now things. Cerek, can you share how you get the close captioning on the instant shows? My mom and I didn't think that this was an option.
I am not on the x-box so I'm not too sure how to do that yet, but you can get the caption on Netflix streaming to the computer. After the show starts, next to the full screen button, a subtitle button will light up. It gave me the options of "off" and "english"… I didn't check if there were any other languages available though. It started maybe 10 seconds after I clicked it.
Survivors is a great show! It's British, if that matters. We keep watching The Office (American version) over and over and over again. Pretty much every episode is hilarious.
I don't know if this makes a difference, but I watch the streaming stuff through my Wii (maybe it's different if you're doing it on a computer?) On the "play" screen there is a button right next to it that says "subtitles/audio" and you can choose to turn them on and in what language. I also mostly watch TV shows on mine, so it may be that subtitles are availble for more tv shows and not as many movies? Right now I've been watching weeds (not for everyone- you have to have a certain sense of humor) I also started watching Drop Dead Diva after I saw it mentioned on here a few times, and it's pretty good for a summertime thing to watch. I got hoooked on 30rock earlier this year- all of the seasons except the current one are on there. GREAT show! I also recommend Psych- they also have all seasons except the most recent. It's a detective show but is more silly/witty, not all about violence and forensic science like most of the shows out now. I'm going to start getting the first season of Castle from dvds. I know it's weird, but I just tend to like TV shows more than movies. I occasionally will stream a movie, but only if I can't think of any shows that sound good If there is a movie I really want to see, I generally see it in the theatre. I'm definitely using my subscription WAY more now that it's summer and nothing is really on!
Well, it looks like I was WRONG! I've tried a TV show and movie both and I'm getting NO CAPTION at all on either one. Just hadn't realized it wasn't there. I'm streaming through a new blu-ray player, so it could be the console, but I seriously cannot imagine any new players NOT having caption available. I tried going into Settings. It does allow me to turn on captioning for discs, but there is no option for streaming. I've checked the drop-down menus for the selections themselves. I only get the option to Resume Playing, Watch from the Beginning, Add to Instant Queue or Rate the video. Looks like I'll either have to check on getting a different player or doing without captioning at all.
http://blog.netflix.com/2011/02/30-of-netflix-streaming-content-has.html It seems when I looked last year, there were only about 100 titles. So now I see they are rapidly adding.
Fave TV series on Netfli: Weeds Dexter Lie to Me Some great documentaries: The Business of Being Born The Lottery Nursery University Born into Brothels Little Man Pregnant in America National Geographic: China's Lost Girls Recent instant movies Chasing Amy Eat Pray Love Easy A Salt DVDs Valentine's Day Unstoppable Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
I am about to watch Anna and the King....new version. Well, now I'm back, and that was a delightful movie! Only I've decided to change the ending to suit me.
Anyone have any new favorites? I'm looking mostly for streaming options, as my video queue is getting pretty long!
I love Korean dramas! Taiwan dramas are good too. I watch them on viki.com (which is fun because users post comments which go on the top of the video), or aznv.tv (no comments).
An older movie: Modigliani with Andy Garcia as the artist. Set in the Paris heyday, many other artists appear, as well as Gertrude Stein. A moving film. Another oldie: Don Juan DeMarco with Johnny Depp.
I LOVE documentaries. Some good ones: Blindsight-about a school for blind children in Tibet (a country where blind children are isolated from society). They set out to climb a mountain! God Grew Tired of Us- about the "lost boys" African refugees who come to America to start a new life. It's a little heartbreaking to see how hard it is to make it here. Stranded -about the Uruguayan rugby team that crashed in the Andes Mountains in 1973 (I think) and survived for 60+ days in the mountains. We thought the Chilean miners was an incredible survival story...it's nothing compared to this one!
I've been watching a lot of documentaries the past few days. After innocence - prisoners wrongly accused. Under our Skin - Lyme Disease Pressure Cooker- inner city culinary arts school Street Fight - Camden, NJ mayoral race
I shared this with one of my visually impaired students- I saw it when we were at the public library- and it really inspired her.
i am doing the trial streaming on my ipad...and it is one of the video apps that does stream from pad to TV... anyway, once the trial version is over, will i get more options to watch? i swear there have been some shows/movies listed that i have no seen on the lists
I am loving Survivors! Right up my alley! KDS, the more you watch, the more they recommend. You should be able to search for the ones mentioned in this thread. The more you watch and rate, the better the selection.
