My partner is having the kids write reports about assigned states in Social Studies. To compliment what she's teaching, I'm setting up a research station in one of my literacy centers tomorrow.

I'm looking for some good websites that are appropriate for 5th grade. They will be focusing on weather at the center in my class, so if it has a weather portion, I'd appreciate it.

    Thank you!

I was going to suggest the same one as well. It has everything you need to know about each state.

Blueberry Farm is a computer program that models a simple ecosystem. It was designed to be used as part of a sequence of science lessons aiming to help students understand more about the use of chemical agents in farming and how these can affect ecosystems. The paper resources are in Microsoft Word .doc form. The video clips show teachers using Blueberry Farm in lessons. Please note that video files are large, so you will need broadband or quite a lot of patience to view them.

Everyday Uses of Minerals (for Gr. 4 - Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion) - from the Mineral Information Institute - Lesson plans and activities in Adobe Acrobat format.

    Grade 5
Structures - Around the World - Activities for the Elementary Classroom - contains eight of the nearly three dozen activities found in the publication, "The Exploratorium's Guide to Scale and Structure" written by Barry Kluger-Bell and the School in the Exploratorium. All activities in this book have been tested in elementary school classrooms.

Evaporation Lab - "The purpose of this software is to enable you to experiment with the phenomena of evaporation. ... Watching evaporation happen in the real world, however, can be a bit dull * watching paint dry is literally an example of evaporation at work. With a good computer several simulated hours can pass in less than a minute, making it easier to experiment with evaporation."

World Weather Watch - complete unit plan that integrates the use of computer technology. Student project examples are included.

Sky Watchers - Sky Watchers is an interactive educational program from Environment Canada for elementary schools, designed specifically to support the science curriculum. Students learn about the science of meteorology by taking weather observations during the school year. This bilingual program is intended as a teaching aid suitable for Grades 4 to 7.
