So here is my situation. I volunteered to be on the committee for Literacy night. I was put in charge. 2nd year teacher, new school and no one including me has ever run a literacy night. I have gotten some information from the internet but I am in a stall place. I have in place:
    1. Plans for a parent package
    2. Flyers and posters
    3. Reading areas and readers
    4. Craft area
    5. Games area - students will be able to go to games after hearing
    three stories
    6. Snack Bar

Please tell me what I am missing and how you would handle the time issues, scheduling etc.

    I appreciate any advice,

    In charge and lost

Assign specific people to be in charge of each area. Delegate, delegate, delegate...

Do you need a sign-in so you know how many parents came?

Do you need an assessment so parents rate what they thought of the night or the specific activities?

Could you have each class or grade be in charge of something?

One of the easiest and most fun "literacy" nights we had was the PTA used the books they got free from the book fair to do "Bingo for Books" and the winners got free books. You could also have flyers, reading areas, etc. It was simple, easy to set up and PTA did most of the work including snacks.

Do NOT try to do it all yourself.

Thank you that helps a lot. I usually think that I am responsible for everything. A sign in would be good so we can see what the turn out is. I will ask about an assessment sheet. Our PTA is going to handle book donations and the snack bar.

Is your literacy night only about reading? Could it include writing activities? What about media literacy? Are you looking for more activities or for advice based on what you have planned?
