    Hello all,

I'm new to this website and I would like to ask for some suggestions. I am an consultant with Usborne. I'm not trying to sale anything - I just want to get a teacher's opinion and other suggestions to encourage parents to work at home during the summer (or as an option instead of the TV) encouraging their children to enjoy reading and learning to read. I hope this is OK.

I am in the process of trying to set up a small part time business making Literacy Bags for preschool to early elementary. My idea is to make bags that parents can fill with phonics books, dot to dot's, activity books, reading wrapups, etc. I will have crayons, markers, journals, writing prompts that parents can use as writing suggestions with kids. Alternatively, I will have a seperate pack for younger non-reading children - they can dictate to parents, older siblings, draw/color stories, etc.

Do any of you have suggestions as to what you would want to see available as parents and/or teachers?

Thanks for any suggestions or help you have - it's appreciated! Tina Peterson

I do literacy bags for a take home activity on DEAR day. I went to the craft store and found 1.00 crafts and put them in there. How about a small felt board with felt peices for a retelling? Lunch bag puppet craft with photo copy pieces. Teacher would just need to have one copy and when she redistributes the bag she can copy and refill. Recipes for a book that deals with food like, Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. Coloring sheet from story cut up into puzzle pieces. Theme related puzzles. Stationary (story related) to write a letter to the main character. (maybe add a couple fun pens) I could keep going.

It's a good idea. Has anyone ever thought of doing something for the older students (grades 3-5)?
