Ok, I do this every year and drive myself crazy with it. There's soooo many procedures to teach in kinder. I though if I can make a list, write each procedure on an index card and put on a ring - it would be a handy way to remember to teach and review these procedures often in the first few weeks.

So I'll start the list of procedures to teach:
    how to line up
    how to stand in line
    how to sit on carpet
how to unpack in the morning and pack up in afternoon
how to how to use materials (crayons, glue, scissors)
    how to check mailbox
how to check if someone is in the restroom

Now, I am drawing a blank. Would you help me out....what other procedures do we teach at the beginning that I am forgetting???:help:

Sounds like you got the majority. The rest of what you teach would probably be according to how you run your classroom. (what to do if you have to go to the restroom, get water/kleenex) How to use inside voices. How to use the playground correctly. Lunch procedures( if you eat in the cafeteria).

My nephew was in K last year and one thing I never thought about (my sister told me about things they were learning at first) was getting their tray, food, and checking out in the cafeteria! This is huge. Most of these kids have never been in a cafeteria style setting and surely not picking their own food etc. I thought this was a GREAT idea. Never occured to me.....

Along those lines (though you may want to put this in a letter to the parents as skills they should enter knowing):

How to open a juice box/ pouch

How to open the fly on jeans if they're going to wear them. (Don't laugh. It's a lot harder than you might imagine when you're using 5 year old fingers.)

Also, what do do if you somehow miss your bus/ ride/ walker. (You go into the office and tell somene, and we PROMISE you won't get in trouble.)

I always tell my parents that they need to teach their boys how to tuck in their shirts, do the belt & zipper. It's amazing how many boys don't know how to undo their belts!

I also tell the parents of the girls to make sure that the girls know how to lift up their dresses & pull down tights. It doesn't all have to come off!

I also teach them to use 1 squirt of soap & to pull the paper towel dispenser 1 time. Oh & to flush the toilet!

How to sit in their chair, with hands folded.
How to move to the carpet
How to raise hand & wait to be called on
    How to get/return supplies

Anything you want them to do, you need to teach them. The list is endless.

    I hope I'm not repeating! I didn't thoroughly read all posts...

How to walk down the hall.

My favorite...when my kids start to get restless, we line up and go outside to the playground. While there, I model how to use each piece of equipment! I demonstrate the wrong and right way!!! Then we walk back inside... This makes recess, a few hours later, much smoother!!!:)

It seems like during the summer I forget all those important details but they flood back to me when I walk in the classroom. I hope the same happens with you, although I am sure you have the majority!

My sixth graders still get lost sometimes (or at least that's what they say...)

And definitely add how to take your folder out of your bag and put a paper into it instead of just shoving it in your pocket or backpack.
