I am on the "free" versions of both of these- but thinking about buying both ($25.00 forever for Library Thing and $40.00 for Delicious Library). They work similarly to each other. They can communicate with each other. Delicious Library scans books automatically.

Does anyone have experience with either or both AND do you know if you can create separate ones for home collection vs. school collection?

    TIA for your input.

I think I'm gonna do it. It's 65 bucks total- but seems worth it to get more organized.

i just learned about library thing and it is amazing.
Bad thing is I just decided to create an excel sheet with all my books (to prevent myself buying 2 and 3 of same book). I jut got done. Now I am starting over to put them in Library Thing. But I am excited. It's great!

you have to download delicious library- it is free for 25 books

You can click on the little camera like icon on the bottom left. Then you move book in front of bar code.

Then you go to "export" export to another application- xml - and then go to library thing and import. Downfall- you have to tag all the books yourself.

Oh, ok. Question, though, does delicious library also catalog books or do you really need both it and library thing?

I used Librarything. I have one (huge) collection, but I tag my books as school or home. I also have a separate tag if they are owned by my district.

But, you can also create separate libraries under one account.

Yes, there is a place to put how many copies you own. And you can "tag" the books with whatever you want. Theme, genre, reading level... I have at least 50 different tags I use.

I love Library Thing and have a subscription. I have the CueCat scanner. It is true that if your books are older and from Scholastic they won't have a barcode to scan but it's very simple to add books by hand. You can tag your books with as many tags as you like and as many copies as you own. I especially like how you can view your collection by the covers since I am a visual person. I did not know delicious had their own program, I will check it out.

Chicagoturtle, have you had books wait in queue for a long time when importing to LibraryThing (.xml)? I have had books waiting for a LONG time and it never updates the estimate from "38 minutes to 1 hour 2 minutes; there are 327 books ahead of you."

I'm trying to use the software at collectorz.com. I got a WASP scanner instead of theirs, and it just came in tonight. And it's not working with the software (grrrrr....). Anyhow, you can check in and out with this software. It's finding every book I have entered by hand, including textbooks. If I can get the scanner hooked up to it, I'm golden. I thought I'd throw it out there as another alternative.

Just catalogued my 500th book. So far there are 257 children's books at my house (really? and I know I have more) and a few stacks a work (they own them) = to 235, and I have a ton more to catalogue there.....

Zoe-www.collectorz.com has a program that you can check books in and out of. You simply click a button and it shows whether it's in or out in your spreadsheet area.

    Chi'Turtle,

How do you (or can you) tag your books in Delicious Library? Mine show up on the shelf in the order I scanned them.

    Thanks!

You can change things in the "notes" section (or any section) and then create a "smart shelf" let me know if you need further instructions.

www.lifeshelf.net allows for book check out and it is free and unlimited, but you just get the basics - book cover image, author name, title.

Libra is a free Windows compatible program that is pretty nifty, but the company has stopped listing it on their website, and that makes me a little nervous.

Does Library Thing not allow checkouts?

When you're in "edit" mode- you can scroll down to the last thing where it says "notes" double click and then you can change- you can put in several notes separated by a comma. I should go do some more scanning right now.

I stayed up really late last night and then had a project to do for grad school early this morning, so i'm exhausted and I've been napping in bed. So here is my motivation to do something.

    Do you have DL 2?
If so, click on a book, on the right side, click details, click the pencil and then you can change anything you want- including the notes section on the bottom-

Oh, boy!! This is fun!! I think I'm addicted to Delicious! I even had my family excited! I love seeing my books on those shelves. I started scanning my teacher books. I have over 1500 classroom library books. They are all in boxes (since I'm pre-service), but at least I have them listed in Excel. I think I'll just plug in the titles and see how it goes. The website says that even with 5000 books it works quickly. I hope it doesn't slow down my computer when I get them all in! I love that you can check your inventory from your iPhone when shopping! And, plug them into my iWeb website. Very cool! I wish I would have known about this when I started collecting my classroom library. :thumb:

Chicagoturtle, I exported my library to Excel, but there was not "Author" field in the list of choices. Can you tell me how to get my library into Excel with a column for Author?

    TIA!!

Help! I'm trying to figure out how to do item checkout for next year on Delicious Library 2. I tried dragging people from my Address Book to DL and that didn't work, but I can drag a title from DL into the Notes section of an address card. How does this connect to iCal? I opened it up and didn't see the title I dragged anyway.

Not sure on this one- I think you can create a smartshelf sort of to indicate that that person has the book. I don't plan on using it that way- so I haven't looked into it. Sorry
