Does anyone know the formula to figure out like if the child is reading the right number of words per minute? Or something concrete to show if a child is not up to par on his/her reading?

    Thanks

The best way to do it is to use a premade assessment, like a DRA. The old fashion way to do it is using a running record and word lists -- but it takes experience to know how to do it, what level of reading selection to use, and which words a student should be able to read with automaticity.

Fluency (using words per minute) can be done with a very simple formula, but it is meaningless if the reading selection is on the wrong level. If the selection is too easy, the child's score will be inflated. If the selection is too hard, the child will be frustrated, and you will not get an accurate picture.

Most schools have assessment tools, like the DRA, to use, or premade running record kits. Does your school have anything like this?

You can also use an individual reading inventory( same thing really as pp stated. You can buy books or you might be able to find something online. I am surprised with the push to test kids constantly these days that your school doesn't have a school wide test. Surprising. Good luck.

I would second what Rain said. Our school uses DIBELS, we used DRA b4.
