I thought we could tell a little about ourselves since we seem to be bonding. :)

    I teach math.

I have been married to my wonderful husband for 6 years.

No kids but we have 2 dogs, schnauzer and lab

This is my 5th year to teach 5th grade.

I want to be a math instructional specialist one day, but not in the near future. I like being in the classroom a lot and I still have a lot to learn before I do that.

I teach all subjects except science (we team teach science and ss).

I'm not married yet, but hope to be in the near future.

No pets or kids, but I have two younger brothers that I spoil and adore.

This is my 5th year to teach 5th grade.

I will graduate with my master's in curriculum and instruction on Sunday July 12!!!

I don't envision myself leaving the classroom to do anything else in the near future.

I teach in a Catholic school which I love and hate depending on the day.

This will be my 10th year, and for the first time there will only be one fifth grade. As a result, we will be switching with the 4th graders, and I will teach all of the SS.

No pets or kids, but I have two neices, one is only 5 weeks old, that I adore and get to play with all summer!! Love summers off!

My other favorite thing about summer is having time to read! Not kid books or trade books, but regular adult fiction! In the four weeks I have been off, I have read 10 books and am in the middle of at least 3 more. Total dork!

Someday I would like to get a master's in tech or media spec. but it doesn't make sense to do it until I get into the public system (Pray!) There's no monetary benefit at my school, and I worry about pricing myself out of a public job.

    I can't imagine not teaching.

I teach all subjects, as I am self contained. I enjoy being self contained!
I have taught for 15 years-and I have taught 5th grade for 7 of those years. The other 8 I taught:kindergarten, second, third, and fourth. I love 5th grade the most, and 4th grade second most!
I have been married to my wonderful husband for 22 years, and we have one son who will turn 21 in September.
We adopted two lab mixes last summer, and right now they are terrorizing the house.
We finally bought our dream home and land in 2008. I absolutely love being in the country, and walking our 22 acres.
I have my masters, and I currently teach professional development classes at a local college 5+times a year. I love teaching other teachers!
I love to read-I have already read 6 books this summer-and I love to knit!

This is my 4th year to teach 5th grade math. Love it...math is truly the best subject to teach.

I am single--hope to be married someday, but for right now I guess God has called me to singleness... :)

I am currently working on my Masters degree, haven't been working on it long so I don't graduate until NEXT summer.

I love being in the classroom, but I would also love to be a math specialist someday.

If I'm not at school, I'm usually at church--I enjoy staying busy with my many church activities.

I love being able to read adults books that have absolutely no educational value during the summer, but I have not been able to read as much as I normally do because of grad school.

I have a self-contained inclusion classroom that also transitions bilingual students to English. I've taught bilingual 1st, 2nd and 5th grades and am in my sixth year of teaching. Working on my Masters in Bilingual Ed... will be done next August! My principal's constant demands due to TAKS (state assessment) are really starting to wear me down, so I'd like to be a reading specialist or perhaps be a professor someday. I'd like to get a doctorate in the next ten years.

I was married seven months ago and have two neurotic cats. I LOVE children's literature and am all about finding new books for my students to fall in love with! I'm so grateful for all the creative ideas shared here... there are only 2 5th grade teachers at my school, so it's great to have the extra input!

This will be my 2nd year teaching 5th and 6th graders (I spent almost six years subbing first). I teach all subjects. I found I like 5th grade a lot more as the classroom teacher than I did when I was subbing!

I have been married almost seven years (anniversary in August). No kids or dogs yet (hopefully soon, but I'm worried about job security and losing our insurance). I have one perfect, adorable nephew who is 10 days old today!

I LOVE to read (I go through about 4 books every two weeks). But lately I've been busy with summer in-service, a grad class, the new nephew and the house that we just started building last Monday! I've also been filling in for my husband's secretary about one day a week. So much going on...who said that summer is actually time off for teachers?!

    4th year teacher

This year will be my fourth year teaching. I have only taught 2nd grade. I am transferring to a brand new school in a more diverse area and looking forward to a challenge. I previously taught for the last 3 years at a very priveleged school. I am excited about getting a huge classroom as I've been in a tiny trailer for all my experience. I have not posted much but I am always reading your posts. I have a notebook I started this summer which is almost FULL of ideas I've gotten from many of you. I especially LOVE looking at classroom photos!
I have been married for almost 3 years (July 22) and have a 17-month old daughter and a 2 year old maltese dog. I love getting summers off but only because I love to brainstorm new ideas for the upcoming year. Thanks for creating this thread!

This will be my 14th year teaching. I taught grades3, 3/4, 4, and 5. This will be my 4th year teaching 5th grade - the best grade!

I'm married with two kids and two beagles : )

I have my Masters and I'm NBCT.

Someday, a Montessori teacher or mentoring other teachers would be my kind of things.

    Hi

    I have taught 5th grade for 4 years, I have also taught science (K-6), 3rd, 4th and 4/5 split.

I enjoy teaching in Green Bay. It is a much smaller community than where I grew up.

I also enjoy skydiving and packing parachutes. It is a great escape from teaching and the politics that can sometimes get crazy there. 10,000 feet straight up, things seem so much more simple.

I am married, no kids, but we have an insane monster dog who acts very much like an only child (I can only imagine). My husband (a second grade teacher) and I both jump and we like to be outdoors as much as possible.

Thanks to all those who post here, give great ideas, and tolerate my ramblings from time to time.

    Blue Skies!

I just moved to a new state after DH got a new job and moved in December. I stayed and finished out the school year.

I have taught fifth grade for three years at a very wealthy Catholic school. I will continue to teach fifth grade at our the new school and its going to be different in terms of students and parents and I am excited about this change.

I have been married for 2 years and have a wonderful fur baby. My husband is an accountant who luckily is willing to help me do all of my "crazy teacher" things but does not understand that something just can't be said by a teacher.

I love this site now that I found it have taken some great ideas.

I have three wonderful children who are very well-mannered and well-adjusted human beings.
I teach 3,4,5,6 grades. Depends on what my school's needs are as it varies from year to year.
I have a 4 year old cat and a new kitten.
As many of you already know, my boyfriend of 17 years just died 3 months ago so I don't know if I should say I'm single or widowed since we weren't married but we have three children together.
I am a pretty happy person and I like to look at the bright side of things. We all know bad things happen but we can[t dwell on the negative or we'll go nuts.
I love Miley Cyrus's song "The Climb" because it's exactly how I feel about life.

My name is Cari. I have taught first grade in Salt Lake City, UT for the past 4 years. I teach at a year round school, so my time off is very short (2 weeks this summer).

I love to travel, and take pictures. I have been married 6 years, but no kids and no pets at this point. I love being in the mountains, of which Utah has plenty. I grew up in Texas and try to get back at least once a year. I also love the beach, and visit my sister in SoCal at least twice a year, haha.

I also love reading, I always try to read one teacher book, and one adult book while I have time off. Right now I am reading Glenn Beck's Common Sense, Inkspell Cornelia Funke, and a writing instruction book for some helpful tips.

    Have a great summer,
    Cari

I have taught fifth grade for ten years and right now I am teaching language arts. Which I am so thankful, since it has always been my favorite subject.
I am single and no children but I have two nephews I adore and a very spoiled cat. I love to read, travel and collect cookbooks (my favorites are the very old, vintage ones.

    Okay, I'll jump in! :)

This is my 4th year teaching :) (Wow, I actually had to think about how many years it was... already losing track!) I teach 5th/&6th Grade Language Arts and 5th Grade Social studies. Myself and 1 other teacher share the grades. 5th Grade = 16 students, 6th grade = 12 students. Small school, but I love it!

I have been married to my wonderful hubby (who is currently deployed) for 8 years, and we have 4 children, 3 boys, 1 girl, ages 7.6.3 and 2.

I am pursuing my Master's in Reading. I will finish in May (YAY) and be certified K-12 and have my reading specialist, BUT I have zero desire to BE a reading specialist, I just wanted to know everything I could to help the students in my room!

Someday I would like to teach teachers at the college level.. Someday! But for now, the classroom is where I want to stay!

This will be my first year teaching 5th grade American History - for the last 13 years I taught 6th grade ancient civ - hence the name :) I'm both excited and a little nervous.

I've been married to my wonderful hubby for almost 14 years now - I'm a lucky girl! No children, but a very spoiled pomeranian puppy and himalayan cat.

I'm really interested in technology in teaching, as well as arts integration. I'm always looking for that next "great idea" to try. Recently a friend has talked me into blogging.

When I'm not teaching I love to read escaspist stuff - murder mysteries, action novels, sci-fi and fantasy. I also love to cook, especially in the summer when there is not such a press to "get it on the table". My husband and I love to hop in the car and go - I like weekend trips better than long vacations.

    I've enjoyed reading about everyone!

This will be my third year teaching fifth grade. I teach science (three periods a day), math and reading. I am married to a fabulous guy and we have three kids who are 18, 15 and 12. My oldest will be leaving for college this September. We have two dogs (we had to put our third down this morning because of cancer, so it has been a sad day in our house), a bearded dragon, two birds and a fish. When not teaching or doing something regarding teaching (which is rare) I like to work out - I used to be a personal trainer but the body sure ain't what it used to be....

I am in the Boston area and we have had three sunny days in the last 30, and so right now I would just be happy with a little sunshine! I love this site and I have gotten so many great ideas from the people on this forum.

I teach a self-contained fifth grade (every subject). I have taught fifth grade for 3 years. I am finishing up my Master's in curriculum and instruction this summer. I am coaching high school cross country this year.

I have been married for 6 years. I have 2 children and one on the way. We have two dogs, two hamsters, one guinea pig, three fish, and one miniature horse... I think we are to the pet limit! :)

I absolutely love teaching! I especially love coming up with new ideas and making my teaching better! I think I'm on the border line of being obsessive! lol

My family had a pony that was supposed to be a mini but she ended up pony size when she was finally done growing, we were told it was due to worming her early.

I have to agree I think you might be at your pet limit.

I'm really enjoying this thread :)

I fell into the whole teaching thing in January of this year when my husband and I moved back to the Middle East after getting married in November 2007. We met in college and spent our engagement in the Middle East as well. My degree is actually in psychology and his in computer and electrical engineering.

My husband teaches high school in our K-12 school, but it has definitely been a better fit for me. I totally fell in love with the teaching and the kids way more than I thought I would. We came to teach English to adults, but due to some very unfortunate circumstances, we are unable to do so right away.

Arabs aren't too big on pets so we have a spoiled hamster named Penelope.

Thank so so much for all of your inspiration and ideas. It has tremendously helped my classroom experience!

Our rainy season is over which means we probably won't have rain again until Oct or Nov. I love it. The cool summer evenings are better than you can imagine!

Hi! I'm new. I teach fifth grade in Fullerton, Ca. This will be my fourth year coming up. I LOVE teaching and I think 5th grade is great! I am always looking for new ideas for how to teach more effectively.

If anyone has any insight on how to teach language arts using literature rather than the reading anthology I would appreciate the help!

This is my 23 year teaching! Wow! Taught everything from Pre-K (12 years) 1st thru 5th for the last 11 yrs. I taught 5th grade Math last year, but this year will teach all subjects. This class comes with an end of year graduation and class trip so it will be busy!

Married 26 years, to a firefighter, two girls, one is married and has given me TWO BEAUTIFUL GRANDCHILDREN! :) they are the loves of my life, boy 3yrs. old and girl 2yrs. old.

Currently having a hard time deciding what theme to go with.
Beach or Extreme sports sort of thingy!?!?

I have no intention of seeking Masters or anything higher...too far gone for that! But applaud all of you who are still in school and specializing. My prayers are with you.

I love my summers. I have been traveling for 5 weeks, I am home for 3 days and Sunday I am headed for the beach for a week! Then I will focus on my classroom!:D

Students start back on Aug 17. One week before public school! Why? Why? Why?

I love A to Z, hope we have fun sharing ideas.

Anyone want class pen pals? Hopefully someone with a different climate and far away from Florida.

This will be my first year teaching. I work in a deaf school. I've been an aide for 4 years. The first three years I was in a first grade classroom. Last year I floated. Now I have my own classroom! We are moving to a brand new building with all kinds of nice up to date technology. The school is huge but the classrooms are a bit small. I'm not complaining though. It'll be my very own space and I'll be the first to use it. The class I have this year will be almost the same students I had my first year as an aide!

I am married with 3 boys (13, 10 and 6). Ironically my middle child was also in first grade when I started and now will be in 5th grade as I teach it! Ha! He's a blessing because he brings me all kinds of goodies from his classroom.

I'm still in school. I'm getting my master's degree. This summer our reading specialist is my college professor. Perfect timing! I'm making sure she tells me everything she wants me to know. Okay, maybe that's a little far fetched but you get the drift.

I have taught 26 years; 22 in Christian school, 4 in public.
    Taught Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 5, and Music.
Starting my masters on July 27; school district is paying (I'm in a high poverty school with low test scores.)
My ex walked out after 26 years; that was 7 years ago. I'm better off!
Have son (28) and his beautiful wife--no kids for them.
Daughter (30) and her four kids, boys 13 & 8, girls 6 & 5. They are all beautiful! She is going through divorce.
Fortunate to have my parents still living.
Church pianist for 19 years; write, compose, arrange, direct, etc.
    2 1/2 year old Yorkie/Pomeranian, Casey! He's adorable!
Moving in next 2-3 weeks to an apt. after 22 years in this house!

I've taught so many different grades but I've been teaching 5th for one year now and I love it. I had 4th the year before. I will be teaching 4/5 combo this fall and I'm excited to try a few different teaching methods.
I have three children. Two are grown and one is still at home.
I have an adult cat and a brand new kitty..they are clones of each other!
I wish I had a dog but that will have to wait until my last child is at college because I'd just get frustrated having to do all the dog walking now with her in the house...trust me..as much as she says she would do it, I know that's not truthful!
I am single/widowed..some of you know my story.
    I love A to Z.
I get so much inspiration from everyone here.

I missed this thread when it first came out because I was on vacation with limited access to a computer!

This will be my 23rd year teaching, and I can't remember how many years of that has been 5th grade.

I am not married, and not interested. I am widowed. Husband died in a car accident around 15 years ago.

I have one son who has moved back in with me. He's a darling. He'll be starting back to school in September to get another degree. He isn't married, and has a trashy girlfriend. (I didn't just say that, did I? I believe they are breaking up soon. One can only hope. I do, however, keep my mouth firmly shut.)

I have a specialist degree--got it so that I could make more money.

Between the two of us, there are four cats living here. Scooter is the worst. He growls and spits while he is loving all over you. He is also a bully, but he's my baby. Beau is just not too bright, but he's a good-looking gray and white short-hair. Boo is an older Maine Coon cat. Very graceful and laid back. Little Girl is a diva. Spoiled rotton by my son.

I live out in the country on six acres. Very peaceful out here. Still, it's only five minutes to work. Atlanta is close by if I want to head in for some culture.

I'm only going to teach 3 sections of writing and 1 of accelerated math next year. We're departmentalizing. The only reason I'm teaching the one math is because the math teacher is afraid of the gifted kids. I love them. I kind of wish we weren't doing this. I'd rather just teach everything to my homeroom.

I've been working on this and that for the past week. Making new titles and posters for the math board, and making writing cards of other words for "said", etc. for the individual groups. I will say that it's nice to not have to think about Social Studies and Science.

Have a great year, and I'll do better about checking in to the 5th grade site here.

This will be my second year to teach fifth grade, and I am moving to a new school in a different state. I also taught fourth grade for two years.

I will be self-contained. In fact, I'll be the only fifth grade teacher. That will certainly be a new experience for me!

I am single with two pets: a cat and lab mix.

It's great to read everyone's post. Sorry I haven't been around. My husband has been in the hospital for over a week. He is still her and will be for a little while longer. He is doing good though.

    New to 5th!

Hi Everyone! This will be my first year teaching 5th grade, and I will only be teaching Language Arts. I taught special ed in middle school about 7 years ago, but have taught Kindergarten for the last 5, so this will be a big switch! I teach in a year round school, so my workdays start back this week. I love the schedule though, and don't ever want to go back to traditional! I am so excited/nervous about 5th grade that I can't sleep. I keep thinking about room arrangement, lesson plans, standards, etc!! Hopefully once we get started that will get better!

I have been married for 9 years to my high school sweetheart, and we have two rambunctious but beautiful children (a girl who is 3 and a boy who is 5). I live in southern VA, but we are from Pittsburgh (GO STEELERS!).

I will be finishing my masters in Reading and Literacy this fall from Capella, but have no intention of leaving the classroom. I just want to teach reading better!

I look forward to getting some great ideas from all of you!

Hello back at you. That's a big switch, from K to 5th. I'd be thinking alot about it, too.

I'm Cheryl, and this is going to be my fourth year teaching 5th grade. I have been in the classroom for 9 years though, as I spent my first four years as a TA in the classroom I now teach in, and a year and a half doing back to back long term subs in the district. I work for one of the Big 5 districts in NY State. While my homeroom is inclusive and I have a teaching partner, we have been departmentalized for the last two years and I teach ELA to approximately 60 5th graders (3 levelled blocks) each year. I really love it but sometimes miss having just my own classroom to be totally involved with!

I am married to a high school biology teacher - we have been married for 7 years and he is my best friend - we are just about inseparable with the exception of his golf league! :) We have a little guy who just turned 4 a few weeks ago, who will be starting Pre K in the fall...I'm thrilled and scared about that all at the same time! We also have an incredibly spoiled pug who is 5. She's a diva!

I am working at a pilot program this summer for our district at my home school - its focus is math and science and is all based around a creek that runs through our school's backyard. It is only half days and for the month of July so I am looking forward to my vacation in August! I'm totally enjoying all of the info I get from all of you here and am looking forward to starting my new year - as soon as I have had a little vacation!

Sounds like an interesting pilot program...a bit like Project Wild activities.

Hi! I am a fourth year teacher. I taught 1st grade for one year and 2nd grade for the past two years. This will be my first year teaching 2nd grade GATE.

I've known I wanted to be a teacher since I was six years old!

Hello everyone! I am getting ready to start my fifth year teacher of teaching... I taught first grade for a year in Florida, then moved to Ohio where I taught third grade for two years, then a year of fifth grade reading/math. This year I am staying in fifth grade but will be the only math teacher - we are completely departmentalized and will teach four classes for an hour each (plus an intervention period). I am starting to get really excited about the upcoming school year (especially from getting back onto these forums)... the only downside is that I have a new classroom and have yet to get it organized!
I'm hoping we will all regularly post on this board and get to know each other better! :)
