I'm teaching 2 summer courses at high-school level ESL (it has students from grades 8-11) and I will be interning with a "master teacher" -- so basically I'm a paid student teacher -- and my first assignment is:

"your very first lesson on Tuesday will be about newspapers in general--sections/editorial page/ownership/by-line/ left-right center policy, The Times specifically"

He wants me to teach them how effectively read a newspaper.... does anyone have really engaging ideas for this topic??

Day 2 I'll be going over the stages of the writing process and would love suggestions on that, too if you have it! :)

I just Googled "how to read a newspaper" and got tons of hits that will be very helpful for you.

After you Google the above, click on the second hit, which shows the web site:
    www.santafenewmexican.com/www/.../HowToReadaNewspaper.doc
(Don't use this link as it won't work)

It is an excellent article by none other than Walter Cronkite on how to read a newspaper. It should give you lots to work with.
