OH MY GOSH I'm back and it went SOOO WELL!!! THE BEST INTERVIEW I've ever had in my life..

I started off nervous and apologized for my nerves because they were showing through..I was like shaking and my voice quivering..but they kinda laughed and said "It's okay!! Don't worry we understand!!"

It was the principal, reading specialist, and two first grade teachers...

APPARENTLY the Principal from the interview I had Friday is the one who called this principal and told her to interview me..so Now i'm like assuming I didn't get hte job on FRIDAY..but the principal joked that the other one said "I Interviewed her first!"- The principal from the job friday told me she didn't know if she was going to have 1 or 2 openings, depending on numbers at the school..so this could be why she recommended me to this other principal for the first grade interview as well.

ANYWAYS the interview today- THEY WERE SO FREAKING NICE. The team would be AWESOME!!!! SO sweet! The principal didn't ask me any trick questions like the other school did...like the "What if a parent didn't like your teaching...." or "WHat if you didn't get along with another teacher.."...This prncipal seriously stuck to questions about how I run my classroom and my strengths.

I JUST LOVED the entire thing. There was a girl leaving before I went in..and that's what really made me a nervous wreck. I don't know how many people they are interviewing, but I'm really hoping I set the bar high because everything I said they were TOTALLY on board for...like implementing math centers, the book basket idea from daily 5..etc..

I JUST have a really good feeling about this. The only thing is that they're worried that a pre-k program might be shut down and then surplus teachers would take those positions..but she said she would let me know either way by the end of next week!

    CROSS YOUR FINGERS!!!!! :)

Good luck. I have an interview tomorrow for a 1st Grade teacher position and am a nervous wreck because I've never taught before. Are there some tips you can give me. I need all the help I can get because I've only been a substitute teacher before and it is nothing like being the real teacher. I went to another interview last week and did terrible. Some questions I would love to get inputs for are: "if I walked into your class at reading time, what would I see?", "tell me about a whole day in your class?", "how can you tell if a student is falling behind in reading?". Also, what would be some good questions to ask at the end of the interview. Thanks

As for interview tips for first grade...I didn't have any STUMPER questions..

But "If I walked into your classroom during reading time.."

(I had a question similar to this..just asking what my reading time would look like/ how I would teach reading)

I said that I usually begin with a mini-lesson- and pull my students to the carpet- to model the skill that we're working on for the week

Then I let my students go back to their seats and independently practice the skill..During this time you could pull a reading group that needs extra support on that skill..etc..

Then depending on how much time is designated for reading, I may pull them back for another mini-lesson- phonics related then let them indpendently practice, or begin my center rotation and guided reading groups after.

I also talked about how I begin the year strictly TRAINING the students on the proper way to buddy read, independent read, and how to choose "good fit books" for them (The daily five gives a lot of information about all of this)

Then each student gets a book basket- that they can keep books in thorughout the week, so if they finish work early they can read from the book basket- and on Friday's we do "BOOK SHOPPING" where the students get to go into the classroom library to choose new books for their baskets.

***** I also spoke about integrating MATH centers into math and they LOVEEEDDD it. Activities and games related to the math skill you're working on in class- as a way to challenge those who finish early, or a way for other students to practice those skills.

I'm sorry this doesn't answer all of your questions but hopefully it helps a litlte. This is not how all teachers do it, but this is similar to how I did it. If i think of anything else I'll let you know. Good LUck!

As for "how can you tell if a student is falling behind in reading?"

You may say that you can do running records on the students regularly to measure growth in fluency, comprehension, retelling..etc... and if there is no growth- you may need to come up with interventions for the student.

    Just one idea.

I really like this idea. I don't do the daily 5 because most of my children are so low that we do individualized curriculum. We do LOTS of independent looking at books, though. Where do you keep the children's baskets when they aren't using them? I'm in a smaller portable and storage is at a premium, but I would like to do the book baskets.

That is awesome! Sounds like you definitely will have at least one offer. I talked about so many of the same things you did, including math centers. My interviewers loved math centers too!! Not many teachers do them but I think bringing that up scores you big points.

Hey guys..someone asked about the book baskets- The "book baskets" i have are just "Magazine files" (You know..the things you keep magazines in...)so last year they were just all lined up along the front of the classroom under the board, and the kids would go up and grab it when they needed it.

I JUST FOUND OUT MORE NEWS THOUGH....(This will be confusing if you haven' tbeen keeping up)- So remember I interviewed for a position last friday..and then for one yesterday in another district school. Well, I had found out that the principal from FRIDAY had called the principal yesterday. I thought she was "recommending" her interview me..because I hadn't sent my stuff to school 2 since January. One of the teachers in interview 2 said that Principal 1 had said "Remember...I interviewed her first!" - So now i'm wondering if maybe she somehow just found out I had an interview and then called her. Well..now i'm just SO confused because I thought I was out of the running for school 1 after I found out she called the other school, but my principla from florida told me yesterday that she received a VERY Good phone call from school 1 and they had "such a nice talk about me". She said principal 1 was VERY (all caps) impressed with me, and she said that she confirmed the principla that she should be impressed and told her more details about my teaching experiences..

SO ANYWAYS>..I'm hoping that this reference boosted my chances at school 1 !!!

HAHAH JUNEbug I know- I'm CONSTANTLY checking my phone..but principal 1 did explain to my reference in FL that they are on a hiring "freeze" so things are still up in the air.

BUT she did tell me that it should be settled by next week, and that I should know one way or the other between the 6-8th...and Principal 2 told me the same as well...only that I would know by the "end of next week" either way.

SO HERE I AM SITTING AND WAITING hoping that by some miracle.the district will resolve things sooner (like today!) and she can call and at LEAST TELL ME yes OR no..so I don't have to be freaking out and wondering anymroe.
