If you had the choice, which one would you rather spend a few days in? (This is NV BTW.) I'm NOT a gambler/drinker. I'm into shopping, dining, museums, & other unique places to walk around. Which place would have more things like that to do?

    Thanks for your help! :)

    What time of year?

But, I think I vote for Reno for the lake, forest, beauty. If it is soon you will get the changing leaves and it may feel more like the seasonal change we don't feel as much in So. Cal.

I would vote for Reno, then. Cool mountain air, etc. It takes a long time to drive around the lake and there are several little towns to explore and lots of cool hikes, picnic areas, etc. There are art galleries, little shops, maybe a show at the casinos.

I am finally getting a vacation - we're going to southern Utah that week. I NEED a break.

    Have fun!

Having visited both, I think this is hands down Reno...

There really isn't a lot to do in Laughlin outside of gambling

Reno. The El Dorado has wonderful broadway like shows (we've been to about 8 and have only disliked one). You're also close to Tahoe (skiing, outdoor sports, etc.), Virginia City (for some mining history and shopping), there are nice museums, great shopping, and some of the best food around (the Altantis Buffet is hands down the best in Reno, and I've heard their Sushi bar is excellent). We're there about twice and year for various reasons (we're not gamblers) and always have a wonderful time. The Grand Sierra, Peppermill, and Nugget are all outside downtown Reno, so you don't have to go down into gambling row (parking and traffic are difficult), and all three have good deals, especially if you book early. We stay at the Comfort Inn by the airport because there is no smoking in the hotel (as opposed to the casinos), a free breakfast, and the hotel is clean. If you want to spend a large amount on a hotel, the Peppermill is newly remodled and very plush. When we stay there, we stay in the Montego Bay wing for about half the price and a smaller room. For all the time we are in the room, it meets our needs nicely.

Thanks guys & especially Ranchwife for your info! :) I figured Reno was more interesting. I never hear about Laughlin, except when it has to do w/ gambling.

Hopefully, I'll be going to Reno for Thanksgiving, but I'll still take Laughlin rather than nothing at all!

That's it - I'm jealous! We need a AtoZ reunion in Tahoe.

I agree about Virginia City. It is a fun side trip.

You never hear about Laughlin because all it has are hotels and gambling. It's very small. It's pretty much just for Vegas people who want to get out of Vegas for the weekend.

Caesar753, I see. I've been to Vegas 3 times myself, but the last time was a long time ago. I'd love to go back, even for just the day. My BF & I flew there for just the day once, it was great!

    Reno for sure.

I used to go to Laughlin all the time when I was younger, my aunt had a condo out there. It's literally a little strip of casinos, nothing in between really. They have had a mall for several years from my understanding, but it's not too great. It's basically gambling and doing things in the river since it runs right behind the casinos on one side of the strip. Not too fun.

Reno ,stayed at the Atlantis overnight on the way back from san Francisco. It's away from all the action but me stayed in the dolphin level and the room was fantastic. Comfy beds lots of pillows, great room service (dd had migraines so not sure of the casino)

I just heard on TV last night that the Grand Sierra is having a big promotion - rooms from $39. I missed the promo code and when it was good to, so if I hear it again, I will get it for you.
