Teachers return to school on Wednesday. Students return on Monday or Tuesday (I don't remember which). Yesterday evening I received a pre-recorded message on my phone from my principal saying that our open house would be held on Thursday afternoon. This is a mandatory event and we're expect to attend.

In the past, our open house has been in September or October (far too late into the year, if you ask me). This news was unexpected.

    My concerns are twofold:

When we return to school on Wednesday, our day will be filled with meetings. All day Wednesday, all day Thursday, and all day Friday. I can't imagine that we will have time to set up our rooms by Thursday afternoon. Our rooms must be completely packed up at the end of each school year, so there is like literally nothing going on in my room right now. I have to unpack and organize everything.

I had plans with friends for that Thursday night. In all the years I've worked here, we've never had an obligation extend into the evening during the week before school starts, so I felt safe making plans. Now I'm going to have to cancel those plans, and they will be difficult to reschedule and impossible to replicate. :(

Frustrating. I wish we had known about this schedule change at the end of the school year or earlier in the summer.

Eek sorry. Thats just a little disrespectful of staff.:2cents:
Our calendar is published in the spring for the next school year, so there are no surprises like this.

I tend to agree. I also feel bad for my coworkers with children who will have to scramble to arrange childcare on short notice.

I had parent orientation tonight. I put in my packet that we would have breakfast every morning. I then had parents telling me that breakfast was served at 7:15 a.m. (school starts at 8 a.m.).

It would have been nice to have known this BEFORE I met with my parents.

That seems so crazy! We have orientation this coming week too - and it's hard to have it in the middle of inservice days... but at least we know it's going to happen!

    That really stinks, Ceasar.

We only had 1/2 day in our rooms before Open House this year... but at least we had 2 weeks notice that it would happen like that.

:-(...They should have given you more notice than what you received. I also do not understand why they make you box-up everything. We're supposed to clean out our desks of personal items. But, we don't have to box-up everything. But, I also have cabinets to store things in. Then to give you no time to get ready to boot. In our last contract negotiation period, our union worked on getting us at least one day of no meetings/workshops during that first week back.

Our school is used for district summer school, so there are teachers and students not from our school using it all summer. We have to pack up our stuff to keep it safe and out of the way of those teachers and students. I get that part, I just think we need more time to unpack it.

That happens here often. It really bites. We had lots of room changes this year so teachers simply did not have enough time to get their rooms clean before Open House. Oh well.
