My district will begin our preplanning in a couple of weeks with a convocation that includes all staff (around 3,500 people). How would you feel about this? I am vaccinated, but it just doesn't seem like the best idea right now...

Sounds pretty irresponsible to me, but when have educational leaders cared about that?

I know my school and several districts in my region are still requiring masks and distancing regardless of vaccination status.

I wish that was the case in my district. However, at this point, we are "mask optional" so I doubt many people will be wearing masks at the convocation.

I've never heard of a convocation. Where will the 3500 people be? In a giant auditorium? Split up into individual meeting rooms? I'm not getting a good picture in my head of this huge gathering LOL

We play explicit rap music and make fun of skin colors at ours. Yes, you read that right.

It actually blew the minds of the new employees a few years ago. We were "de-stressing". Those that are brighter than a brown paper bag are the butt of the passive-aggressive jokes by our leadership.

We will all be together in a giant auditorium.

I would feel fine as I am vaccinated, and I would wear a mask. 3500 is a lot in one spot IMO knowing the current data on the virus. Hopefully they may reconsider before the event takes place to less people in a room.

Is attendance mandatory? What happens if you are unable to attend? Do you need a doc note?

I'm vaccinated, so I wouldn't be concerned. Instead of doing our big district gathering this year, my district is having the district leadership do "smaller kick offs" at each building (feasible, because it's a tiny district). I'm dreading that because there will be more expectations as far as our enthusiastic participation in said kick off (cheering, shouting, clapping, etc.). At the big district event, it's easy to just be a number in the crowd.

They are also of course getting rid of the only good part- there used to be a really delicious catered lunch after the big "rah rah" thing.

It seems irresponsible to have a gathering that big with masks optional, especially if attendance is mandatory. Recent data is showing that the vaccines don’t completely prevent illness, just lessen the severity, but as a parent I’d worry about bringing the virus home to my unvaccinated young child. Aside from that, it just seems so easily avoidable. They could at least have staff gather at their individual buildings and participate in smaller events.

Yes, we are required to attend. I am not sure what would happen if anyone was unable to attend, but it definitely wouldn't look good since it is our first official day to report back.

How many disruptions do you all think your schools will have this semester with all of these variants?

It sounds very irresponsible to me too. I have a good friend who had been fully vaccinated for 2 months (at least) who almost died from Covid. She is not in any high risk group either. Her family all got real sick too.

Oh wow, I know we don't want to stomach another lockdown but it seems we're headed that way.
