Random question...When you get a Lakshore catalog (I got the new 2010-2011 one today) do you look through it and want everything?(but it's way too expensive) So do you say to yourself, hey I could make some of that stuff on my own? If so, do you ever actual make it? And if so, will you share it with me? I just want all their reading activities and kits and I imagine my kids engaged and learning quietly. Maybe this summer I'll actually make some of those activities that look so engaging.
Yes and yes! And I don't even have my own classroom yet! But seriously a lot of the things in there I do think 'Hey, I could make that'. I like going to the Lakeshore store to really see what things look like to have a better idea of how I could actually make them, but I haven't created any yet since I am not teaching. One of the ones I remember thinking that about was a word game where different words or letters were written on little pasta shaped cutouts. Why not write them on real dry pasta? I bet the kids would like that even better : ) I'm interested to see what people have copied!
I looked at their web site a few times and drooled all over the keyboard. I like the ridiculously expensive furniture. And everything really. If I ever get a classroom I will definitely steal ideas.
I got my catalog today too! But fortunately (or unfortunately for my wallet) there is a store 15 mins from me. I can spend soooo much money there so easily and still want more! I haven't tried to make anything on my own, but that is a good idea.
I know exactly what you are talking about! I always go through with several different color post-its:buy it, want it, make it. I have made a few things for myself- like sandpaper letters. I hope to do more this summer.
I've been folding down almost every page corner as I've looked through it this evening! Have you guys noticed all the activity kits that have wipe-off worksheet type activities and come with a CD (or tape) that gives the kids directions. I'm thinking I could record directions and stick some of my phonics and sight word worksheets in page protectors (or laminate them) and make a station. I just love the idea of having the directions recorded for kids to listen to and guide them through the activity.
Being poor, I have made lots of things based upon what I have seen in the catalogues. Math Their Way and Workjobs both have home made items. Once you get going, you can think of lots of activities to make to suit your teaching.
I have to say that I am one of those that want everything out of the catalog. One of the things that I have done, is to go on their website and make my want list. Every paycheck (bi-weekly), I will buy one or two items off of my list. If you go to retailmenot.com you can usually find a coupon for $5 off $25 order and that is what helps me buy one every paycheck. This seems to work well and keeps the kids excited by getting only one new thing at a time.

Wow....that was me just yesterday!! I was looking through the catalog for a good hour to steal some ideas. I plan on making my own set of magnetic punctuation marks, rather than spending 20 something on them. Like you, I also noticed the listening center materials w/ the wipe off sheets. I would love love love to have that set in my room!
Same here! Then I always worry if I order something that they'll switch me from kinder to 5th grade or something!
