Lace shirts have become popular and I really love them! If you wear a tank top or cami underneath the lace shirt, do you think it is appropriate to wear to school? (as a teacher?) I wouldn't wear a tank top or cami alone (obviously) so I'm not sure it would be okay to just throw a semi-transparent shirt on top and call it a go. What do you think? Examples: Or just a little lace on the top--
I would wear something like the top one maybe with a blazer or cardigan, but probably not the other two since they're a little more sheer and would be harder to cover (the third would be pointless to wear covered anyway -- it would defeat the purpose of the lace). Probably though I'd err on the side of caution and just not wear lace shirts, even though they're in right now and very cute. :/
I have some pretty modest tanks, so I'd wear all of them. The middle one is the on,y one I'd question, I'd probably wear I with a tank with a higher neck.
I'd wear them, but not to work. There are some women with whom I work who wear them, but they are the ones who make questionable clothing choices.
I have a shirt similar to the last one, but with long sleeves. I thought I would wear it tomorrow to work, but now I'm thinking probably not!
I have a shirt that's cream and has a lace top over it built in on the front only. I wear it all the time. It has regular short sleeves though. I always wear something over my shirts though as I'm usually cold. We're very laid back. Most of the time I wear a v-neck tee with a fleece zip.
I'm not sure about this one.... But, I've always heard this as the advice to follow: "If you have to question the appropriateness of an item of clothing for a specific situation, it seems you already know the answer. It probably isn't appropriate." So, with that in mind, I'd err on the side of caution and not wear it to school.
At my school it could be ok, (with a tank top or cami under) but I would probably choose not to wear them, or wear it with a cardigan. The first and second pictures are ok, and I think they would be fine. I like the 2nd one a lot, but the girl's messy weird hair is really distracting me.
The top in the middle looks almost jacket-like..which could work.?.but the lace on that one looks like cheap curtains....I think she's wearing a sheath dress underneath? And her hair is distractingly messy and weird as linguist pointed out!:woot:
They are not something I would wear to my school with just a cami or tank under them. In fact, if the kids wore them like that, it would violate the dress code. Wear the lace with something more substantial underneath.
I don't usually wear them to work. However, I've seen other teachers wear them at my school and have never really thought about it! I just usually don't wear them because my tanks have thin straps, so I don't feel like it would be appropriate.
I'd wear them with a normal t-shirt underneath, but not a cami/tank top. I think the latter is too revealing, in my opinion. However, I'd imagine that this varies depending on your own school's climate.
I'm kind of surprised by the responses. I am a modest person in general, and I would be fine wearing a tank top under a lace shirt. I love that first one. It would need to be a tank top that covers bra straps, though - not a cami. That's how I would feel comfortable with it. I'm sure it depends on the school. People at my school wear sleeveless shirts, which isn't much different.
This is pretty much what I was going to say. I have a lace shirt that looks kind of like the 2nd one, but it has a lace front and solid back. I wear a tank top with thick straps and a higher neck underneath it. I've gotten tons of compliments on it when I wear it to school. I don't feel like it's the same as just wearing a tank top by itself. I guess you just have to know your school climate though- if you're questioning if it's appropriate, that might mean that it would be at your school.
I've always gone by the rule mentioned here- if you're questioning it, then it's not appropriate. But I dress extremely modestly at school. I, for example, would never wear anything shorter than floor length pants/skirt to school. Lots of women wear skirts or dresses to the knee or right above. Which I don't think are inappropriate, but I would certainly would never wear them! I actually think that the lace shirts with tank top or cami underneath are quite conservative and really nice looking. But again, if you have to question it... What would you all think about a keyhole back shirt/dress? I love those little keyholes, but I think it would be inappropriate at school.
I think there's nothing wrong with keyholes, they're not showing anything The first dress / top I simply don't like, it's too bulky, and it just fits weird. The second would be ok, but I would never wear anything that skin tight at school, I would top it with a cardigan, but then the keyhole is gone, so there's no point. The 3rd one I like, it's a little looser, it can be very nice with slacks (not tight pants like in the picture), I like the lace and the keyhole and it's not inappropriate at all.
Our dress code prohibits wearing attire that intentionally shows bra straps, so unless you can get around that with #3, it would be out. I agree that covering it up does defeat the purpose of having it.
I don't like lace, so I wouldn't wear them for that reason. However, I don't see them as inappropriate with a wide strap tank or t-shirt under it.
I think keyholes are fine if they are high enough or you're wearing a shirt under them. That second shirt is WAY too tight for work, IMO. I would see that as a much bigger issue than the keyhole! But...I am in California. We are much more casual here than a lot of the country, so my perspective is probably different.
I've worn a shirt very similar to the first one with a thicker strap tank under it (so my bra straps couldn't be seen) several times and it wasn't a problem. I'm a big fan of lace
I see absolutely nothing wrong with keyholes. Actually I just bought a new shirt that has a small keyhole in the back. They're not showing anything and they just add a little bit of detail. As far as the lace shirt argument, I would never wear it because lace isn't my style. I have seen other teachers wear them. To me, they feel too casual for school, unless you're wearing a jacket over it.
I agree that it depends on the climate. Here, it wouldn't fly by itself here; however, I would wear it under a cardigan with a tshirt underneath. As far as keyholes go, I don't think there would be a problem with it as long as it didn't show anything.
