can anyone who is participating in the APLE program please explain to me in simple terms what it is all about? i read the site but was a little confused. are you still required to pay loans while working and money from the program sent to your creditors rather than you receiving a check? please help. i am lost. also, can someone apply for the program when they begin student teaching or is it only allowed as a full time teacher? are applications received from the local school/ districts? thanks.

I'm not currently in the program but I hope to be so I know a little bit about it. As I understand it, the state of CA reimburses you for your student loans in exchange for teaching in certain schools. You have to be nominated by your university (or in some cases your district if you're in an intern program) in order to participate; you can't apply on your own. Universities are given a certain number of slots that they can use for their students. Some universities don't use all their slots and these can be "taken" by other universities.

Yes, you must continue to pay your loans once you are employed as a full-time teacher. At the end of the school year, the state of CA will send a check directly to your lender after they receive proof that you have completed a full-year of teaching.

If you're currently in a credential program then you should have your university nominate you as soon as possible. Don't wait until you are done with your credential. It may be too late by then.

Here are some links that provide decent information about the program:

Here is a list of university coordinators:

Again, I would contact the APLE coodiantor at your school. Even if they've used up all their slots, they should be able to find an unused slot from another school.
