Hi everyone, I work as a para in an SLD class that is mostly high school except for one period of seventh grade English. The teacher I work with is brand new. Anyway as a disciplinary measure he orders me to sit by kids who are misbehaving. As a result of this the seventh graders resent me and call me every dirty name they can think of. Last week a special ed long term sub was let go from our school because one of the high school girls claimed he touched her. Now two boys in my class are threatening to go to an administrator with a similar story. Both of them told me this last week. I documented this and gave it to their counselor. is there anything else i can do? I have stopped sitting next to students when the teacher tells me to. Should i ask for another assignment?
I think you've made a good start. I agree with jaime, in that you need to also talk to the administration, but I would also have a chat with the teacher, if you haven't already done so. Doccumentation is absolutely vital, and it sounds as if you're already doing so. Document everything, so that if they DO decide to try this, you have a truckload of documentation to show what's really been going on.
Have someone validate you too. Did the classroom teacher overhear the students threatening to report you? If you have witnesses along with documentation, you will not have a thing to worry about.
Things turned out okay. The counselor talked to the two boys and they have not bothered me since. Thanks for asking.
I had a similar situation and went to my boss immediately and I still work there. We had a horrible atmosphere for awhile b/c a teacher got caught doing that and had just gotten fired and I guess it fed the kids imaginations and I was completely unprepared for their rage. I hope things are better for you now.
