Lately I've been learning a bit more about internet speeds because I'm moving and finally have access to broadband, after a year of dial up. I found this site that lets you easily check your speed.. I wanted to know what I had now so I could figure out how which plan I want when I move...

    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

The fastest I have ever tested was 42 kbps download/94 kbps upload. If you think that's slow, the other night my download speed was only 26 kbps!! Ugh!! :) These numbers don't mean anything to me, but obviously the higher the number the better.

Well I'm glad I found this site because know I know that I don't need to pay for speeds as high as 3.0 mb, like the Earthlink guys were trying to talk me into. I now know that I will be perfectly happy at the "lite" plan they have, at 1.5 mb, considering what I've been used to with dial up. It'll save me lots of money!

So what do you have? Who's your provider, and do you have cable or DSL? I think it'll be interesting to see the variation.

AT&T DSL. I watch a lot of movies and baseball games online, which is why I pay for such a fast connection.

    upload speed 368 kbps

Why would I have fast download but slow upload? Hmmm...maybe I'll try it again!

Download was 1218 kbps and upload was 844 kbps on my latest test. Mine is through Road Runner and it is too slow when trying to watch videos, but other than that it's fine.

I have dial up 28.6. It sucks! Can't get DSL where I live. I want to get satellite sometime soon but have to wait until finances are better.

I guess it means that 1. You live close to where you are "pinging" the server. Like I live close to Atlanta, so I'm getting the Atlanta server. If I go to Seattle, it's lower.

    2. But not much, because I (you) also probably have a high speed Internet service plan.

    3. And a computer that can handle the high speeds.

    4. And you're "pinging" the server at a non-peak time. Try it again later in the evening. I'll bet it goes up.

That's just my take on it. I'm sure some computer tech person is going to step in any moment and explain everything. However, I don't really care as long as I don't have to wait around forever to get to where I want to go.
