Just curious...positive or negative?

I tend to be a "glass half full" person.

As I read different posts, I tend to group people (in my own mind) as a "glass half full" or a "glass half empty" type of person.

What do you consider yourself, and how does that affect your teaching style?

I consider myself a positive, half-full kind of person. However, I am a worrier, so if I don't keep my worries in check, they will snowball and shift my glass to "half empty".

During those times, I have to step back (mentally and/or physically) and give myself time to work through the situation. Once I do, I typically come out with a positive attitude because I don't like chaos, confusion and drama in my life. It drains and annoys me.

As a teacher, I feel I am positive, but also realistic. I am tactful, but honest when I have hard news for a parent.

During conferences, I try to always start off with something positive about even the most difficult student. When I reprimand the class or individual students I say repeatedly, "I like you, but I don't like what you did."

When it comes to dealing with my coworkers (and really anyone I meet), my attitude is, "I like you unless you give me a reason not to like you. And even then, if you make amends, 9 times out of 10 I'll let it go"

I honestly can be both. When faced with big personal decisions, I'm automatically glass half empty. I panic and only think of the worst. Once I analyze it a bit, I start to change into glass half full.

Teaching-wise, I would say most of the time I am glass half full. With the exception of most of last year. I'm usually pretty level headed, and I rarely complain. For example, when my old district (in NC) kept adding assessments- we were up to DIBELS, Reading 3D (similar to DRA), and AIMSweb, teachers were having melt downs. I liked getting so much data and getting a clearer picture of my students. Yes, it took a lot of time to administer all of the tests, but I felt the end results were worth it.

I'm a glass half-full type of person in general and that includes in the classroom as well.

A positive person sees the glass half full.

A negative person sees the glass half empty.

An engineer sees a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be :)

I try to be glass half full most of the time, and succeed most of the time professionally. I'm not always as successful in my personal life.

:hugs: Aw, right back at you. Your post inspired me to look back at some of my old postings (I found stuff I had forgotten about, like back in 2010 I had a teacher burst into tears in my classroom because she didn't get more than two Christmas gifts from her students ) It was actually interesting and pretty fun. I didn't realize that I've been talking with you all so long and about so many topics.

:yeahthat: The kids make it easier to be positive. At work, I have on my Mrs. Catz face. At home, I'm just Em, so I have to work at being positive harder sometimes.

When it comes to work-related matters, I guess I'm half-empty. I consider myself a realist and an "it is what it is" type of person.

Outside of work, I'm a very happy-go-lucky/positive person. It's like I'm a completely different person once I leave work.

I'm a realist. I take what happens and learn from mistakes when they happen. It is the only way I can do my job without stressing about every little concern. When something breaks, well it could have been worse. I look at the bright side of everything and it makes a difference in the mood in my classroom. We have children with very, very challenging behaviors and severe learning issues and they take baby steps that are almost impossible to see without a positive outlook.
I do acknowledge the negatives but don't focus on them.

It's a good question and I also see some people as clearly holding an opposite viewpoint. Having someone who announces problems and shortcomings can be damaging to staff morale (and mine). It can be very tiring.

I am pretty much exactly the same way. Also, I am more positive in my professional life than in my personal life. It's something I'm working on.

    I really enjoyed this.

I'm not half full, the glass is completely full. If someone thinks it's a bad thing, just say, "That's the proper serving size." At least you have a glass at all.

I think most teachers are optimists at heart. I also think it is time to leave the profession when optimism becomes cynicism and the pessimism - give the kids a break!

I already answered this thread's question, but I really am an optimist. Ever since I've been done with my own schooling, I've been extremely lucky with jobs, my engagement and marriage, our house... No kids of our own, but, that's not really a problem. I have tons of kids at school. That's plenty.

That glass is completely empty because I drank it all.

In all seriousness, it probably depends on my circumstances. I try to stay optimistic, but when a lot of things are wearing me down I will sometimes slip into pessimism. I also have a natural sort of sarcastic positive pessimism constantly, if that makes any sense. i.e. I act negative but I'm really positive.

I totally get this! My summer school class had SO many behavior problems that it just wore me down constantly (today was the last day and I couldn't be more thrilled). I would literally go home every day and give myself a mental pep talk about how I was going to go in the next day with a really positive attitude, be really patient with the kids, etc. and by 9:30 every day all positiveness had been beaten out of me!

In reality, I'm a half full type. I'm guessing I come across as half empty here though, because this is largely my venting place.

I am definitely a half-full kind of gal! Even early I was talking about something and said, ¨Oh, that makes me so happy!¨. Then my daughter commented, ¨Everything makes you happy.¨ I prefer that to the alternative. :)
