    Hello

I just relocated to VA for a job after searching in my area (CT) for almost 8 years.
In CT, all teachers *must* join the union regardless.
However, in VA, you have the option.

Can I ask any of you veterans should I join or not? I know in CT the union basically just does contracts and such. They are not really strong in other areas (I know from experience)

What are the real benefits of joining or should I hold on to m money (I need every penny at this point). Thanks

Join. If you ever find yourself with an unfair evaluation or write-up or needing to file a grievance, the union won't be able to support you if you're not a member.

Join. I was at a school without a union once. 80% of the crap they pulled never would've happened with a union. I'm a member now and would NEVER consider dropping my membership.

I say join. Better to have it and not need it, then to not have it and need it.

I was hoping to find a job in a public school because in my private school there is no union. Yes, there are dues, but it is a protection that you never appreciate until you need it. Join the union.

Worse case scenario...you run into legal issues with a student or their family and you are sued. Remember, you don't need to have actually broken the law to be accused of breaking the law. Defense attorneys aren't cheap. The union will send union attorneys to fight for you otherwise, you're on your own. Scary. Things happen nowadays. You never know.

I joined a union in a non-teaching environment at my previous job. You are covered by all the rules of the union but do not have their protection if you are not a member and won't be able to vote on any changes to the contract when they renew. I definitely think it's better to have that protection and not need it than to possibly need it and be left to fend for yourself.

Definitely join. In a perfect world employers and employees would work hand-in-hand to collaborate, but this world isn't often perfect.

I say join. I was worried when I started working at a private school because usually they don't have unions. I found out they did have one and it really gives you peace of mind.

Join! I know 3 teachers at my school alone who used the union last year to help them with some issues.

Virginia doesn't have unions. We have trade associations (though they cal themselves unions).

I'd still say to join though, because of the protections they offer.

Virginia does not have Unions we have the national education association (NEA) Virginia Education Association (VEA) http://www.veanea.org/ and then each school division will have their own and a rep......it is optional to join but recommended that everyone does so.

Ask other teachers about it or HR. FYI Hamptons is called Hampton Education Association (HEA)

VEA Local Associations found at this link - find your school division.
